Air India Southeast Asia expansion

The plans to add Manila and Jakarta to its network is part of Air India’s strategy to strengthen its presence in key international markets. Southeast Asia remains one of the fastest-growing aviation regions in the world. There are strong economic ties, tourism exchanges, and a rising number of business travelers between India and ASEAN nations.

Currently, direct connectivity from India and Indonesia remains limited, with only a handful of carriers offering direct flights. Philippines on the other hand has no non-stop flights from India. Air India’s decision to introduce these routes is expected to bridge this gap and provide more seamless travel options.

Why Manila and Jakarta?

Both Manila and Jakarta are crucial commercial and tourism hubs in Southeast Asia. Manila, the capital of the Philippines, has a strong Indian diaspora, a growing business sector, and increasing tourism ties with India.

The country’s friendly visa policies for Indian travelers and its stunning beaches, historical landmarks, and business-friendly environment make it an attractive destination. Additionally, the Philippines is a key destination for Indian students pursuing medical education, further driving demand for direct flights.

Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is one of the most dynamic cities in Southeast Asia. Indonesia and India share strong diplomatic and trade relations, with bilateral trade surpassing $38 billion in recent years. The direct Air India flights to Jakarta will boost connectivity for business travelers, tourists, and the large number of Indian-origin residents in Indonesia. Moreover, Bali—a top holiday destination for Indian travelers—is easily accessible from Jakarta, making this route even more significant.

Impact on Competition and Connectivity

The Indian aviation market has seen a surge in direct international flights in recent years, with airlines expanding their presence in long-haul and regional markets. Currently, no airline operates direct flights to Manila as there are no direct flights.

Indonesia has non-stop flights from Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. IndiGo connects Mumbai with Jakarta and Bengaluru with Bali. Air India operates ex-Vistara Delhi-Bali route after the Air India-Vistara merger. These are the only flights available between these two countries. A large chunk of travelers to these cities take connecting flights.

Air India’s entry into these routes will not only enhance connectivity but also challenge existing carriers operating one-stop flights via other Southeast Asian hubs like Singapore, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur.

IndiGo has already been expanding its presence in Southeast Asia with flights to destinations like Bangkok, Krabi etc… However, as a full-service carrier, Air India is will offer a different experience with premium economy and business class options, catering to both leisure and corporate travelers.

Fleet and Operational Considerations

Air India has been aggressively expanding its fleet following its privatization under the Tata Group. The airline recently placed a historic order for 470 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing aircraft. This includes widebody aircraft like the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The new Manila and Jakarta flights are likely to be operated using Boeing 787s. These aircraft are well-suited for medium-haul international routes. The Boeing B787s does also offer good cargo capacity.

With the introduction of new aircraft, an upgraded in-flight experience, and enhanced customer service, Air India is positioning itself to compete with some of the best international airlines.

India’s aviation sector is undergoing rapid transformation. Air India is playing a crucial role in this by boosting direct connectivity between India and international destinations. Southeast Asia, in particular, has become a priority market for Indian carriers. The region has strong economic growth, tourism potential, and increasing demand for seamless travel options.

What’s Next?

While Air India has not yet officially announced flights to Manila and Jakarta, sources indicate that services are expected to commence in mid-2025. With this expansion, Indian travelers can look forward to more convenient and efficient travel options to Southeast Asia, further strengthening ties between India and the region.

Apart from Manila and Jakarta, Air India is reportedly looking to further expand its presence in Southeast Asia. Cities like Hanoi, Bali, and Phnom Penh can be expected to be connected in the coming years. This could be because of India’s Act East policy, which focuses on strengthening trade and cultural ties with ASEAN nations.

As Air India continues its ambitious global growth strategy. Its entry into Manila and Jakarta shall mark another milestone in its journey toward becoming a world-class international airline. Travelers can expect enhanced connectivity, superior service, and a renewed Air India experience in the years ahead.
