NEW YORK- A United States (US) military C-17 aircraft will transport approximately 205 illegal immigrants of Indian origin to the Shri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport (ATQ), Amritsar in Punjab on February 5, 2025.

The deportees originate primarily from Punjab and its neighboring states, marking a significant development in the ongoing US immigration enforcement actions.

US Deported Illegal Indians

Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav has confirmed the state government’s preparations to receive the deportees, with dedicated counters established at the airport to process their arrival. The landing, initially scheduled for morning hours, has shifted to the afternoon.

Punjab NRI Affairs Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal has voiced strong opposition to the US government’s deportation decision. Dhaliwal emphasized that many of these individuals entered the United States legally on work permits but remained after their documentation expired. The Minister advocates for granting permanent residency to these immigrants, citing their contributions to the American economy.

Dhaliwal plans to address these concerns directly with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in an upcoming meeting next week, focusing on protecting the interests of Punjabis residing in the United States.

The Minister has launched a public awareness campaign urging Punjab residents to pursue legal migration pathways, emphasizing the importance of education and skill development for international opportunities.

The deportation follows President Donald Trump’s recent directive to strengthen immigration enforcement after assuming office in January 2025. This action particularly affects Punjab natives who entered the United States through unofficial channels, commonly known as “donkey routes,” despite investing substantial sums of money in their migration attempts.

Indian Deportations and Border Crossings

Immigration enforcement data reveals a significant increase in Indian nationals facing deportation from the United States, with ICE records showing 370 Indians deported in 2023, averaging more than one deportation per day.

This enforcement pattern gained renewed attention following the December 2023 incident where French authorities grounded a Nicaragua-bound flight carrying 303 Indian passengers suspected of illegal migration intentions.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement statistics document 5,477 Indian deportations between 2018 and 2023, with peak numbers occurring during the Trump administration.

The year 2020 marked the highest deportation rate with 2,312 Indians removed, coinciding with then-President Trump’s February visit to India. The preceding year, 2019, witnessed 1,616 deportations, underscoring the intensified enforcement during Trump’s presidency.

A Gujarati-American businessman, speaking anonymously to the Times of India, confirms the heightened scrutiny of illegal immigration during Trump’s tenure. The source identifies Gujarat and Punjab as primary origin states for deportees, many of whom entered the United States without proper documentation.

ICE emerged from the 2003 merger of the U.S. Customs Service and Immigration and Naturalization Service to enforce these regulations.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection data exposes an unprecedented surge in border interceptions, with 96,917 Indians apprehended during fiscal year 2023. This period, spanning October 2022 to September 2023, represents a historic peak in attempted illegal crossings by Indian nationals into the United States.
