IndiGo has confirmed the incident and is providing support to authorities investigating the matter. It’s worth noting that there was initially some confusion about whether the victim was cabin crew, but the update clarifies that it was ground staff.
More details are awaited and we have our deepest condolences to the family members of the IndiGo staff.
In a separate incident, an IndiGo Airlines flight 6E5028 from Mumbai to Varanasi made an emergency landing at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on Sunday evening after a woman passenger suffered a fatal medical emergency onboard.
The aircraft diverted to Chikalthana Airport at approximately 10 PM on April 6, 2025, when 89-year-old Sushila Devi from Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, experienced serious medical distress during the flight.
The flight crew decided to divert to the nearest suitable airport when Devi’s condition rapidly deteriorated shortly after departing from Mumbai. Despite the quick diversion, medical personnel who boarded the aircraft upon landing at Chikalthana Airport confirmed that Devi had already passed away.
Airport officials reported that the passenger began feeling unwell while the flight was airborne. The flight crew followed emergency protocols, arranging for medical assistance to be ready upon landing.

Similar Incident
A serious accident at Kolkata airport’s operational area on October 15, 2015 morning left an IndiGo security staff member with potentially life-altering injuries after being struck by a fuel tanker driving outside designated lanes.
The incident occurred around 6:56 am, just after IndiGo flight 6E906 received clearance for its Delhi departure. Amit Singh, performing security duties at bay 27, was observing the departing flight when a Reliance fuel bowser struck him from behind.
Singh’s scream went unheard amid the aircraft engine noise. Before colleagues could intervene, the bowser’s front wheel crushed his legs, causing compound fractures that required reconstructive surgeries at a private hospital.
Airport sources report the fuel tanker operated approximately 10 feet outside the painted vehicular lane that vehicles must follow in operational areas. Driver Abhishek Kumar only became aware of the accident when other ground staff frantically waved and shouted, but by then Singh’s legs were already under the rear wheel.
“It was a horrific accident. The bowser had no business being there,” stated an airport source, emphasizing that strict adherence to demarcated lanes for aircraft and vehicles exists specifically to prevent such incidents.
Police arrested Kumar for negligent and rash driving following a formal complaint from IndiGo Airlines. Industry insiders attribute the increasing hazards in operational areas to inadequate training of new drivers hired to replace experienced staff lost to high attrition rates.
“Working in the airport requires discipline. That unfortunately is sorely lacking in the present crop of drivers. This leads to accidents when there should be none,” an airline official noted.
