RIYADH- The upcoming Saudi Arabian carrier, Riyadh Air (RX) has revised the delivery schedule for its inaugural Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, pushing its operational launch to the third quarter of 2025.

The Saudi carrier had initially planned to commence services by mid-2025.

Riyadh Air 787 Delivery Delay

The airline’s first aircraft components have entered the final assembly phase at Boeing’s facilities. Supply chain constraints have influenced the adjusted delivery timeline, with the carrier planning to initiate operations shortly after receiving its first aircraft, The National reported.

Riyadh Air maintains close coordination with Boeing regarding the delivery schedule for additional aircraft later in 2025. The airline faces unique operational constraints as it cannot utilize older or leased aircraft alternatives while awaiting its new fleet.

The carrier has advanced in its operational preparations, with more than 60 pilots and cabin crew members already recruited. The airline anticipates receiving its air operator certificate from Saudi aviation regulators within weeks.

Plans for unveiling the aircraft’s interior configuration and service offerings remain scheduled for announcement in the coming months. Boeing has previously committed to ensuring timely deliveries to support the airline’s launch requirements.

First Spare Aircraft Arrived

Earlier this month, Riyadh Air marked a significant milestone as PIF Governor and Chairman H.E. Yasir Al-Rumayyan inspected “Jamila,” the airline’s first leased Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, at King Khalid International Airport. This aircraft serves as a technical spare and training platform for the Saudi carrier’s upcoming operations.

The Dreamliner, showcasing Riyadh Air’s distinctive pearl livery, features a premium cabin configuration distinct from the airline’s future fleet design. This interim interior arrangement supports immediate operational needs while the carrier develops its signature cabin product.

The leased aircraft operates separately from Riyadh Air’s confirmed order of 72 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.

It fulfills essential functions in the airline’s Air Operator Certificate (AOC) certification process with Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation, transitioning to technical spare duties once commercial operations begin in 2025.

Chief Financial Officer Adam Boukadida revealed expansion plans at the Future Investment Initiative forum, announcing intentions to acquire additional widebody aircraft capable of carrying over 300 passengers.
