JOHANNESBURG- A light aircraft crash near Lanseria International Airport (FALA) has claimed the life of the pilot and seriously injured the sole passenger on board.

The fatal accident involved a Cessna 210 operated by an unidentified private party. The aircraft had departed from Lanseria and crashed shortly after takeoff, prompting an investigation by the Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) of South Africa’s Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA).

Plane Crash Killed Pilot

According to the AIID, the Cessna 210 aircraft crashed at approximately 10:00 AM local time on June 5, within the grounds of the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve near Johannesburg (JNB).

The pilot was fatally injured on impact, while the passenger sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to a local hospital.

AIID spokesperson Sisa Majola confirmed that the aircraft had only just departed from Lanseria International Airport (FALA) when it went down.

Emergency response teams quickly secured the site, and AIID investigators were dispatched to gather evidence. A preliminary report is expected to be released within 30 days on the SACAA official website.

The AIID expressed condolences to the families of the victims and reiterated its commitment to uncovering the cause of the crash to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Similar Incident

This tragedy follows a similar fatal incident just weeks prior, where a Rans S10 Sakota (Registration ZS-WXE) crashed near Middelburg Airfield (FABD), killing both the pilot and passenger.

The deceased were identified as Quinton Steyn (39) and his wife, Lizette Steyn (38), who were flying from Nelspruit (MQP) to their home in Middelburg.

The aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff on May 5 and was consumed by a post-impact fire. Emergency personnel pronounced both occupants dead at the scene. The site was secured by the South African Police Service (SAPS) pending an investigation by the AIID.

AIID confirmed that the aircraft remained within the airfield boundary during the incident. A full investigation is underway, and findings will be published in due course

These recent accidents highlight ongoing safety concerns involving light aircraft in South Africa. Both incidents occurred shortly after takeoff and involved aircraft operated for private, non-commercial purposes.

While full reports are pending, investigators will focus on aircraft maintenance records, pilot training, flight conditions, and operational decision-making.

The AIID continues to emphasize its commitment to aviation safety and urges all private aircraft operators to strictly adhere to pre-flight safety protocols and regular maintenance schedules.
