Though family stories claimed all relatives had left Sicily when his grandfather immigrated to America over a century ago, DiBiasi’s genealogical investigations in 2015 uncovered an exciting revelation: he still had living family members in Pozzallo, a beautiful coastal community in southeastern Sicily.

The moment DiBiasi met his Sicilian relatives, he created an instant connection. “They just looked like family,” he recalled. “It was surreal, but I just knew; this is my family.” His relatives welcomed him warmly, eager to share family stories and heritage details that had been lost to the American branch of the family.
Walking through Pozzallo revealed another surprise – DiBiasi’s mother’s family held significant standing in the local community. His exploration of the town frequently led to chance encounters with previously unknown relatives. “While walking down the street with one cousin, we’d run into another cousin who I’d meet for the first time,” DiBiasi explained. These spontaneous meetings added richness to his experience of reclaiming his heritage.
