TEXAS– Raymond DiBiasi, a Philadelphia-based flight attendant of American Airlines (AA), reunites with his long-lost family in Sicily, Italy. DiBiasi used his flight privileges to book a discounted ticket with American Airlines (AA) to Rome (FCO), with a planned connection to Catania (CTA).

Though bittersweet that his mother never knew about these family connections, the journey transformed DiBiasi’s understanding of his heritage, turning names on a family tree into meaningful relationships that now form an important part of his identity.

American Airlines Attendant Reuite

Raymond DiBiasi, a Philadelphia-based flight attendant, grew up aware of his Sicilian ancestry but never imagined it would evolve into a personal connection.

Though family stories claimed all relatives had left Sicily when his grandfather immigrated to America over a century ago, DiBiasi’s genealogical investigations in 2015 uncovered an exciting revelation: he still had living family members in Pozzallo, a beautiful coastal community in southeastern Sicily.

Travel to Pozzallo

In 2023, DiBiasi arranged his journey to Sicily, using his flight privileges of the American Airlines (AA) to book a discounted ticket to Rome (FCO) with a connection to Catania (CTA).

His plans faced an unexpected challenge when Mount Etna erupted, grounding flights throughout the region. Mount Etna is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, Italy, in the City of Catania.

“That volcano sure kept me on my toes.”

Undeterred by this natural obstacle, he quickly adapted his travel plans, rebooking to an alternative airport and driving several hours to reach Pozzallo.

Family Reunion

The moment DiBiasi met his Sicilian relatives, he created an instant connection. “They just looked like family,” he recalled. “It was surreal, but I just knew; this is my family.” His relatives welcomed him warmly, eager to share family stories and heritage details that had been lost to the American branch of the family.

Walking through Pozzallo revealed another surprise – DiBiasi’s mother’s family held significant standing in the local community. His exploration of the town frequently led to chance encounters with previously unknown relatives. “While walking down the street with one cousin, we’d run into another cousin who I’d meet for the first time,” DiBiasi explained. These spontaneous meetings added richness to his experience of reclaiming his heritage.

Legacy Connections

The journey brought bittersweet feelings for DiBiasi, who wished his mother could have known about her Sicilian family members.

“I just wish my mom was still here; this is her side of the family, and she never even knew about them.”

The experience transformed names on his family tree into real connections, creating lasting relationships that now form an important part of his identity.

Re-uniting Through Flight Privileges

In the story, American Airlines (AA) plays a significant but understated role in Raymond DiBiasi’s journey to reconnect with his Sicilian family. As a flight attendant, DiBiasi used his flight privileges to book a discounted ticket with American Airlines (AA).

When Mount Etna erupted and disrupted his original travel plans, DiBiasi’s connection to the airline industry likely gave him the knowledge and flexibility to quickly rebook to an alternative airport. This industry familiarity helped him overcome a significant obstacle that might have derailed the plans of a less experienced traveler.

Without these professional privileges, this meaningful family reunion might not have been possible or would have been significantly more difficult to achieve.
