United Airlines (UA) first unveiled its plan to overhaul employee uniforms in 2017, aiming to develop a cohesive and contemporary appearance for its 50,000+ frontline employees, including flight attendants, pilots, and ground staff.
The design process began with high expectations but quickly became complex due to varied roles, climates, and employee preferences, PYOK reported.
The initial designs, revealed in 2019, included futuristic elements, such as piping on blazers and color-blocked skirts.
However, employee feedback was swift and critical. United responded by simplifying the aesthetics, removing unpopular features, and opting for a cleaner, more timeless look. This feedback loop led to major revisions, extending the rollout timeline.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in early 2020, the project was temporarily paused. Progress resumed in 2023, when new prototypes began circulating among employee testers.
Over time, United refined the color scheme, moving from a broad mix of purples, greys, and blues to two signature blue tones more closely aligned with the airline’s core branding.

Although the official switchover is scheduled for May 28, 2025, some logistical hurdles remain. Not all flight attendants have received the complete uniform package, and key items like winter coats are still in production.
United is prioritizing a sleeve-fitting issue on one of the dress options and has offered a $150 stipend to allow crew members to tailor items locally as needed.
The new uniforms include combined name badge and wing pins, introduced in 2023, allowing pronouns to be displayed. United’s 2024 safety video showcased the uniforms early, giving frequent flyers a preview.
Brooks Brothers and Tracy Reese emphasized ergonomic fabrics and contemporary styling, though some crew members await tailored fits. The phased rollout ensures smoother adoption, with full completion expected by late 2025.
