Preliminary Crash Details

Footage verified by BBC shows the aircraft rapidly descending before erupting in flames on impact. Aviation specialists reviewing the crash suggest a possible issue with the wing flap configuration during takeoff.

Geoffrey Thomas, a senior aviation analyst, observed that the plane’s undercarriage was still down, but the flaps appeared to be fully retracted—a highly unusual configuration moments after takeoff. “Flaps should only be retracted after the undercarriage and during stable climb,” he noted.

Terry Tozer, another expert, cautioned against premature conclusions due to poor video quality but echoed concerns about improper flap extension.

Marco Chan, a former pilot and lecturer at Buckinghamshire New University, added that flap misconfiguration could suggest human error, but current footage doesn’t conclusively prove it.

The exact cause remains unknown, but the incident has prompted full-scale investigations by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Boeing, and other authorities.

Survivors, Tributes, and Ongoing Response

In a miraculous turn, 40-year-old British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh survived the crash. Separated from his brother during boarding, who remains missing, Ramesh recounted escaping through smoke and fire just seconds after the plane exploded.

Global leaders, including King Charles, expressed condolences, describing the tragedy as “desperately shocking.” Boeing has extended sympathies to victims’ families and is in direct contact with Air India.

Flights at Ahmedabad Airport resumed at 16:05 IST, with India’s aviation ministry affirming adherence to strict flight safety protocols.

Using Flightradar24 data, the aircraft was recorded on the ground at 13:30 IST. It began acceleration by 13:34, reached a height of 625 ft at 13:38 with a speed of 174 knots, before the signal was lost.

Investigation and International Coordination

Authorities have launched a multi-agency investigation. DGCA, Boeing, and international aviation watchdogs are collecting black box data and flight records.

Meanwhile, Air India has activated a crisis response unit to support victims’ families and coordinate international repatriation efforts.

Airports in Delhi, Mumbai, and London have ramped up security and contingency planning for upcoming flights involving Boeing 787 aircraft. Boeing has not issued a fleet-wide grounding but is working with operators globally for safety reassessment.
