FLORIDA- Spirit Airlines (NK) is set to expand its network with 40 new routes and 2 new destination this spring, fresh off its four-month bankruptcy restructuring.

The airline will add Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Columbia, South Carolina, to its route map while enhancing connectivity between existing destinations.

This expansion comes at a challenging time for Spirit, as the airline navigates financial losses and aircraft groundings due to ongoing engine inspections. Despite setbacks, the carrier remains committed to increasing travel options for its passengers.

Spirit Airlines Adds 2 New Destination

Starting in June, Spirit Airlines (NK) will introduce flights to Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (CHA) in Tennessee and Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) in South Carolina.

These cities will receive nonstop connections to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), and Orlando International Airport (MCO). One way fares for these new routes will start at $50.

In addition to the two new cities, Spirit will launch 34 new routes in May across airports it already serves.

Key additions include eight new flights from Nashville International Airport (BNA) and seven from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), further strengthening its domestic network.

Financial Challenges and Operational Adjustments

Despite expanding its route network, Spirit Airlines (NK) continues to face financial struggles. The airline exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy on March 12, having significantly restructured its debt.

The restructuring followed Spirit’s decision to reject a merger with Frontier Airlines (F9), opting instead for a creditor-backed plan.

However, the airline reported a net loss of $1.2 billion in 2024, with an 8% revenue decline to $4.9 billion.

Seat capacity has also been reduced, with the airline operating 17% fewer seats in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the previous year.

Additional cuts of 16% are expected in the second quarter, including the cancellation of 12 domestic routes by the end of March.

Impact of Engine Inspections on Operations

A significant challenge for Spirit Airlines (NK) is the ongoing Pratt & Whitney engine inspections on its Airbus A320neo fleet.

These inspections, required for safety and performance reasons, can take up to a year to complete, forcing Spirit to park multiple aircraft. This has contributed to the airline’s capacity reductions and financial strain.

Despite these operational challenges, Spirit remains focused on providing low-cost travel options and expanding its reach within the US and beyond.
