DOHA- Qatar Airways (QR) reported a record-breaking 28% rise in annual net profit, reaching 7.8 billion Qatari riyals ($2.1 billion), according to a preliminary release issued by the airline on Monday (May 19, 2025). The airline operates out of Hamad International Airport (DOH), one of the fastest-growing aviation hubs globally.

Despite the absence of complete revenue and passenger data, the airline’s recent achievements—including major fleet expansion and strategic equity investments—highlight its aggressive global growth strategy and adaptability to shifting global dynamics.

Qatar Airways $2.1 Billion Profit

Qatar Airways’ 28% year-over-year profit increase marks a significant milestone for the state-owned flag carrier.

The surge, recorded for the fiscal year ending early 2025, reflects the airline’s strategic efforts to strengthen its global presence, optimize its fleet, and form key partnerships amid evolving market conditions.

CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer attributed the financial success to industry partnerships that allowed the airline group to stay agile amid geopolitical, economic, and environmental uncertainties. These remarks align with the airline’s broader approach to resilience and innovation in a competitive market.

Among Qatar Airways’ most significant moves was its investment in international carriers. The airline acquired a 25% stake in Virgin Australia (VA) and another 25% stake in regional South African carrier Airlink (4Z), extending its global footprint across the Asia-Pacific and African markets.

These investments are expected to bolster connectivity and passenger flow through Doha (DOH), reinforcing its role as a major transit hub.

In comments shared earlier this year with Reuters, Chief Commercial Officer Thierry Antinori reported a 9% increase in passenger traffic across the network between April 2024 and January 2025. Notably, growth in Europe reached 14%, with Germany specifically seeing a 12% rise.

These figures suggest that Qatar Airways is not only growing faster than the market average but also consolidating its presence in strategic regions.

Historic Widebody Order

Last week, Qatar Airways announced the largest aircraft and engine order in its history, committing to 210 widebody aircraft from Boeing and over 400 engines from GE Aerospace (GE).

The record-breaking agreement includes 160 firm orders and 50 options for Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 777-9 aircraft, along with a monumental GE Aerospace deal for GE9X and GEnx engines—the largest widebody engine order in the company’s history.

The deal consists of:

  • 130 Boeing 787 Dreamliners: These long-range aircraft are known for their 25% improved fuel efficiency and enhanced passenger comfort.
  • 30 Boeing 777-9s: The world’s largest twin-engine aircraft, designed to reduce emissions and fuel use by 25% compared to earlier models.
  • 50 additional options: These provide the airline flexibility to expand further based on future demand.

Qatar Airways Group CEO Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer emphasized that this fleet expansion is driven by the airline’s pursuit of efficiency, sustainability, and passenger experience rather than mere scale. With this order, Qatar Airways is set to become the largest Dreamliner operator in the Middle East.

Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, acknowledged the significance of the partnership and expressed commitment to supporting Qatar Airways’ future growth.

Record Engine Deal

In parallel with the aircraft acquisition, Qatar Airways signed an agreement with GE Aerospace for over 400 engines, including:

  • 60 GE9X engines for the Boeing 777-9.
  • 260 GEnx engines for the Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
  • Service agreements covering maintenance, repair, and overhaul of both engine types.

This is the largest widebody engine order in GE Aerospace’s history. The new agreement builds on a previous order of 188 GE9X engines, reflecting Qatar Airways’ long-term trust in GE’s engineering and operational capabilities.
