The football world in Poland is abuzz with the alarming situation at Zagłębie Lubin, a team that was expected to shine in Ekstraklasa this season. However, after a string of disappointing performances, the club finds itself in a precarious position, struggling to avoid relegation. The latest defeat at home to Raków Częstochowa, 0:2, has only added fuel to the fire.
Underwhelming Performance
Zagłębie’s performance this season has been nothing short of underwhelming. With only 23 points from 26 matches, the team is languishing in 15th place in the Ekstraklasa table, just two points above Śląsk Wrocław and Stal Mielec. The Lubin-based club has won only two matches this year, against Puszcza Niepołomice (2:1) and Korona Kielce (1:1).
Criticism from Boniek
Zbigniew Boniek, the former president of the Polish Football Association (PZPN), has been scathing in his criticism of Zagłębie. In an interview with „Przegląd Futbolu,” Boniek highlighted the stark contrast between the team’s financial backing and its performance on the pitch. „Zagłębie Lubin is something that sociologists should think about. It’s a team that has excellent conditions, where everything is paid on time, and has incredible financial potential, as it’s owned by one of the largest state-owned companies. Yet, there’s a negative atmosphere, and some negative currents,” Boniek said.
Boniek also pointed out the team’s lack of stability, citing the constant changes in the coaching staff and the treatment of its employees. „They wanted to make Fornalik a failure, they wanted to make Stokowiec a failure. They had a sports director, Burlikowski, who did a good job, but they wanted to make him a madman,” Boniek added.
What’s Next?
With four crucial matches ahead, Zagłębie will need to regroup and focus if they want to avoid relegation. The team will face Radomiak Radom on April 5, followed by matches against Górnik Zabrze on April 11, Jagiellonia Białystok on April 21, and Stal Mielec on April 28. Anything less than a winning streak could spell disaster for the Lubin-based club.

Expert Analysis:
„Zagłębie Lubin’s situation is a puzzle. Despite having a strong financial backing, the team has struggled to find its footing in Ekstraklasa. The constant changes in the coaching staff and the negative atmosphere within the club are likely contributors to the team’s poor performance. It’s clear that something needs to change, and fast, if Zagłębie wants to avoid relegation,” said Paweł Skóra, a Polish football analyst.
With the clock ticking, Zagłębie Lubin will need to dig deep and find a way to turn its season around. Anything less could result in a devastating relegation to the lower divisions.
