MUMBAI- An IndiGo Airlines (6E) flight 6E5028 from Mumbai (BOM) to Varanasi (VNS) made an emergency landing at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (IXU) after an elderly passenger died mid-flight.

The aircraft diverted to Chikalthana Airport on Sunday evening (April 6, 2025) when 89-year-old Sushila Devi from Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, experienced a medical emergency that ultimately proved fatal.

IndiGo Woman Passenger Dies

The Mumbai-Varanasi IndiGo flight diverted to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’s Chikalthana Airport at approximately 10 PM Sunday following a serious medical situation involving an elderly passenger.

Despite the quick decision to land, medical teams who boarded the aircraft upon arrival confirmed that 89-year-old Sushila Devi had already passed away.

Airport officials reported that Devi, a Mirzapur native, began feeling unwell shortly after the flight departed from Mumbai. The flight crew made the decision to divert to the nearest suitable airport when her condition deteriorated.

Following the emergency landing, the MIDC CIDCO police station completed the necessary documentation and procedural requirements.

After authorities completed the required formalities, the IndiGo aircraft resumed its journey to Varanasi. According to airline representatives, Devi’s remains were transported to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar for further procedures.

An IndiGo flight en route from Patna to Delhi made an emergency landing in Lucknow after a passenger experienced a severe medical emergency mid-flight. Despite immediate intervention by the crew and medical professionals upon landing, the passenger did not survive.

The incident occurred aboard flight 6E2163 when Satish Chandra Burman, a resident of Nalbari, Assam, suddenly became unwell during the journey. Flight attendants quickly responded to the situation, prompting the pilot to divert the aircraft to Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport to secure urgent medical assistance.

Flight 6E2163 had departed from Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport in Patna and was headed to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi when crew members observed the passenger experiencing what appeared to be cardiac distress. Following standard emergency protocols, the flight crew immediately alerted the pilot, who made the decision to land at the nearest suitable airport.

Upon landing safely in Lucknow, medical personnel boarded the aircraft to attend to Burman. Despite their rapid response and medical interventions, they were unable to revive him.

Similarly, on March 21, 2025, a 52-year-old passenger was found deceased aboard Air India (AI) Flight AI2485 after landing at the same Lucknow airport. Aashif Daulla Ansari from Bihar’s Gopalganj remained unresponsive when a flight attendant attempted to clear his meal tray following landing.

Medical professionals onboard confirmed Ansari had no pulse. His seatbelt remained fastened and his meal untouched, suggesting he may have been unconscious for a significant portion of the flight. Though emergency care was provided immediately upon landing, Ansari was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
