Ethiopian’s Growing Network

Hyderabad, also known as the “City of Pearls,” has grown into a vital economic hub. Ethiopian’s decision to fly to Hyderabad reflects the opportunities the city can offer. With this, for the first time, Hyderabad will have direct, non-stop flight connectivity to Africa.

Addis Ababa, with its Bole International Airport, serves as a major hub for transit passengers traveling across Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Hyderabad will be the fifth destination the airline adds in India, along with existing operations in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai.

This new route will enable travelers from Hyderabad to seamlessly connect to over 130 destinations in Ethiopian Airlines’ global network, including major cities like Johannesburg, Nairobi, Lagos, and North America.

India-Africa Growing Demand

The India-Africa air travel demand has witnessed consistent growth over the years. The growth was mainly driven by increasing trade relations, investments, and tourism. Hyderabad is a key center for the pharmaceutical industry, which has strong ties with African nations.

In 2023, 80,000 people flew between Hyderabad and the African continent. This highlights that there is a decent demand for connectivity between the city and Africa.

Ethiopian Airlines’ new flights to Hyderabad also reflect the airline’s strategy to capture a share of this growing demand.

Cultural ties also play an important role in fostering connectivity between the two regions. The movement of students and tourists between India and Africa has increased significantly, making direct air links like this one more essential.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

The launch of Hyderabad-Addis Ababa flights will further strengthen India-Africa relations. India is one of Africa’s largest trading partners, with bilateral trade exceeding $90 billion in recent years. Ethiopia, as the headquarters of the African Union, is a key partner for India in its engagement with the continent.

In July 2024, Ethiopian Airlines’ request to add more rights was approved. Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) granted 3x weekly more additional rights, increasing the total weekly flying rights to 38x from 35x weekly.

Following this development, Ethiopian Airlines was expected to enter Hyderabad in October 2024. However, the flights were not open for reservations. The airline will finally connect to Hyderabad from June 2025.

Bottom Line

Ethiopian Airlines’ new Hyderabad-Addis Ababa route is set to bridge the gap between two rapidly growing cities, offering new opportunities for trade, travel, and tourism.

How well this route performs will depend on the demand from both business and leisure travelers, but the potential for success appears strong given the current dynamics of India and Africa.
