Air Canada’s First XLR Service to Southern Europe

Air Canada (AC) will launch its first long-haul A321XLR route from Montreal (YUL) to Palma de Mallorca (PMI) in June 2025.

This is the first time Canada has scheduled nonstop flights to the Balearic Islands, reflecting growth in North America–Southern Europe travel.

The Role of XLR in South American Markets

Iberia (IB) is using the A321XLR to reopen routes to Recife (REC) and Fortaleza (FOR) for the first time since 2011. The XLR allows airlines to operate transatlantic routes at lower cost and with fewer passengers, making markets previously unprofitable viable again.

These flights also complement Iberia’s existing European network by feeding connections through Madrid (MAD).

Bottom line

The A321XLR extends the range of narrowbody aircraft up to 3,920 nautical miles under real-world conditions.

Airlines benefit from lower trip costs compared to widebodies, fewer passengers required for break-even, and the ability to open new “thin” long-haul markets.

It is rapidly replacing Boeing 757s and reducing operational risk on transatlantic and long-haul leisure routes.
