NEW YORK- A Lufthansa (LH) Airbus A340-300 operating as Flight LH405 from New York (JFK) to Frankfurt (FRA) safely returned to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) after experiencing an engine failure and subsequent hydraulic issues during its journey over the Atlantic.

The specific aircraft, identified by its registration D-AIGN, is part of Lufthansa’s long-haul fleet primarily used for intercontinental routes between Europe and North America.

Lufthansa A340 Engine Failure

The aircraft, registered as D-AIGN, was cruising at 35,000 feet approximately 120 miles southeast of Boston (BOS) when the flight crew reported the failure of engine number 2.

The pilots immediately issued a PAN-PAN call, indicating an urgent situation requiring assistance but not posing immediate danger to life.

“We have an engine failure on engine 2. The other three engines are stable for the moment.”

The crew requested and received clearance to descend to 29,000 feet. After assessing the situation for 17 minutes, they made the decision to return to JFK rather than continue the transatlantic crossing with the compromised engine.

During the return journey to New York (JFK), the aircraft conducted fuel dumping procedures over designated areas to reduce its landing weight to acceptable levels. This standard safety measure ensures the aircraft doesn’t exceed maximum landing weight limitations, which could stress the landing gear and airframe.

The situation became more complex when hydraulic problems emerged as the aircraft approached JFK. The flight crew was forced to discontinue their initial landing approach and request delay vectors – a temporary flight path away from the airport – to address these additional technical issues.

After resolving the hydraulic complications, the pilots successfully positioned the aircraft for a second approach. A 27.2-year-old Airbus A340-300 landed safely on runway 31L at JFK without further incident.

Similar Incident

Lufthansa Airbus A380 flight LH453 executed an emergency landing at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) after a passenger’s tablet became trapped in a business class seat mechanism, creating potential fire hazards.

The April 23rd incident occurred during the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Munich Airport (MUC) service when crew members identified visible deformation of the device, prompting immediate safety protocols to prevent possible lithium-ion battery combustion.

Lufthansa flight LH453, a daily service between Los Angeles and Munich, departed LAX at 17:47 PST on Wednesday, April 23rd, operating 17 minutes behind schedule. The Airbus A380 (registration D-AIMC) carried 461 passengers, representing a 91% load factor for the 509-seat aircraft.

While cruising at 35,000 feet over Canadian airspace, approximately 300 nautical miles northwest of Winnipeg, the cabin crew discovered a business class passenger’s tablet had become lodged within their seat’s mechanical components.

The electronic device showed visible signs of deformation from pressure applied by the seat mechanism, raising immediate concerns about potential battery overheating and fire risk.
