British Airways Flight U-Turn to London

Flight BA35, operated by British Airways, took off from Heathrow Airport (LHR) at 1:16 PM local time after a short delay.

Bound for Chennai International Airport (MAA), the 11-year-old Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, registered as G-ZBJG, did not continue its journey due to a technical anomaly detected during flight.

According to British Airways, the flight crew opted to return to its origin as a routine precautionary measure.

The airline emphasized that this was not classified as an emergency landing. Flightradar24 data showed the aircraft circling the Strait of Dover several times before safely touching down at Heathrow.

Upon landing, all passengers and crew disembarked normally. The airline stated that it is actively working to rebook affected passengers and resume operations. Technical teams are currently inspecting the aircraft to assess the issue.

British Airways reiterated its commitment to safety, explaining that returning to the departure airport in response to technical alerts is a standard protocol. The early return allows for immediate maintenance intervention while minimizing passenger inconvenience.

Passengers on board were assisted by ground staff upon arrival, with rebooking and accommodation support provided where necessary. No injuries or emergencies were reported during the event.

Lufthansa Flight U-Turn to Frankfurt

A Lufthansa (LH) en route to Hyderabad (HYD) from Frankfurt (FRA) was forced to turn back mid-air on Sunday under unclear circumstances.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner operating flight LH752 aborted its scheduled journey shortly after departure.

The aircraft was bound for Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD), but air traffic controllers at the destination were informed that the flight had initiated a return to Frankfurt. The airline has not yet disclosed the reason for this mid-air diversion.

Flight LH752, operated by Lufthansa (LH), took off from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) at 14:15 local time, headed for Hyderabad (HYD). The flight was expected to land at 06:00 IST on Monday morning. However, shortly after departure, the aircraft reversed course and returned to its origin.

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport’s air traffic control confirmed receiving a notification from Lufthansa indicating the flight’s return. Flight tracking data corroborated this maneuver, showing the aircraft reversing near Eastern Europe and heading back to Frankfurt.

While Lufthansa has yet to issue a formal statement explaining the turnaround, the lack of distress signals or emergency declarations suggests the decision was precautionary rather than crisis-driven. Passengers were reportedly not in immediate danger, and the return appeared orderly and controlled.

Context of Recent Boeing 787-Related Incidents

The incident involving Lufthansa’s Boeing 787-9 comes in the shadow of a major aviation tragedy involving the same aircraft family.

On 12 June, an Air India (AI) flight—AI171 from Ahmedabad (AMD) to London Gatwick (LGW)—crashed shortly after takeoff, killing 241 people.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner collided with a structure near Ahmedabad Airport (AMD), causing fatalities both onboard and on the ground. A sole survivor has been identified, while investigations continue in cooperation with Boeing and Indian aviation authorities.
