ULWE- Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani confirmed on Sunday (March 16, 2025) that the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI) will be inaugurated in June, 2025, marking a delay from the previously scheduled April 17 launch date.

The new greenfield airport represents the second major aviation facility in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, complementing the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

Navi Mumbai International Airport Inauguration in June

Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL) is developing the project through a 74:26 joint venture between Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL) and the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the airport in February 2018. The project carries an estimated cost of Rs 16,700 crore and aims to alleviate congestion at Mumbai’s primary airport while accommodating India’s growing air traffic demands.

Adani shared his enthusiasm about the project on the social media platform X, stating: “A glimpse into India’s aviation future! Visited the Navi Mumbai International Airport site today—a world-class airport taking shape. Set for inauguration this June, it will redefine connectivity & growth. A true gift to India!”

He also acknowledged the team’s contributions, adding: “Kudos to the Adani Airports team & partners for making this vision a reality.”

This announcement adjusts the timeline previously outlined by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd CEO Arun Bansal in December 2023, when he indicated commercial operations would begin in April, with domestic flights launching in the second half of May and international service starting by late July.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport features an ambitious design incorporating two runways and four terminals. Once fully developed across all five planned phases, the facility will have capacity to handle 90 million passengers annually.

Air India Trial Flights

TATA Group-owned Air India (AI) will conduct test flights at the Navi Mumbai International Airport in April 2025, marking a significant milestone for India’s first multi-nodal airport. The national carrier aims to validate the airport’s readiness for widebody international aircraft operations through these test flights, according to Bloomberg.

IndiGo Airlines has already performed the first validation flight using a single-aisle Airbus 320 in December 2024, paving the way for commercial operations at the new facility. India’s low-cost carriers will lead the operational transition to this second commercial airport developed by billionaire Gautam Adani, which targets a June opening date.

IndiGo, India’s largest airline, plans to initially shift part of its operations to the new airport, with other carriers expected to follow. Tata Group’s Air India Express, along with SpiceJet and Akasa Air, are currently in discussions about completely relocating their operations to the new facility.

Air India’s full-service carrier will maintain operations at the existing Mumbai airport while gradually transferring domestic operations to Navi Mumbai, situated approximately 22 miles southeast of Mumbai’s current congested aerodrome.

The $2.1 billion airport represents a landmark infrastructure project designed to address aviation bottlenecks for Mumbai’s 21 million residents. Local authorities aim to establish an international transit hub comparable to Dubai, London, and Singapore, with plans to develop an “aero city” that will generate additional non-aviation revenue streams.

The Adani Group holds a unique position in managing both existing and new Mumbai airports, providing a strategic advantage in negotiating airline relocations.
