Singapore Airlines (SQ), the flag carrier of the Republic of Singapore, is one of the world’s most luxurious airlines and provides an unparalleled passenger experience. SQ is the go-to airline for most travelers in and around Asia, and with connectivity to most major countries around the world, it is also among the most popular airlines to currently fly.
With a fleet mainly dominated by heavy bodies including the giant Airbus A380, many pilots also consider a stint with Singapore Airlines as the pinnacle of their respective careers. The Temasek Holdings-owned operator employs thousands of aviators from around the world and has some of the industry’s best and most renowned benefits.
Here is everything you need to know about the compensation received by Singapore Airlines pilots.
Singapore Airlines Pilot Salary
Singapore Airlines has an academy of cadet pilots but also employs direct entry pilots. The carrier has a large number of second officers as well given their frequent and long-haul operations to cities in Europe, New Zealand, and the United States. Below is a breakdown of salaries received by each grade of pilots.
Second officers
Second officers are the junior-most category of pilots employed by Singapore Airlines. Generally, they are individuals freshly out of the carrier’s cadet programs. They are rarely involved in taking off and landing planes but are more like standby pilots, who are gaining flying hours under the watchful eyes of captains and first officers, before making the jump to the next level.
This band of pilots mostly is in the captain’s or first officer’s seat when they are in their resting periods and are largely involved in communicating with air traffic control and making minor changes to the flight routing, altitude, etc. Second officers are paid a salary between SG$ 75,000 and SG$ 90,000 depending on their track records in flying school and any past experience.
Notably, second officers at SQ are required to be tied up by a seven-year bond as the airline spends significantly on their type ratings and training towards becoming a first officer.
First officers
A first officer at Singapore Airlines is responsible for being the captain’s right-hand man and assisting in communication, and safety procedures and occasionally flies the aircraft too. If the captain is serving a resting period, the first officer becomes the leader among the cockpit crew members and makes decisions on matters such as navigation.
First officers at Singapore Airlines are paid between SG$ 120,000 and SG$ 180,000 per year in the basic salary component, which is commensurate to the type of aircraft they fly and their experience. All first officers are paid SG$82 per flying hour but unlike several carriers around the globe, SQ does not provide its pilots with a minimum guarantee over a certain duration.
That said, even their basic salaries are industry-leading and pilot morale at the airline is very high due to a respectable amount of flying hours being rostered.
Captains
The captains are responsible for all the things from the plane push back to the landing and whether is it safely parked at their destination. They are in command of the aircraft and lead the cockpit as well as cabin crew members. Captains are tasked with making decisions during emergency situations, flight planning, and management of their colleagues on board.

Singapore Airlines pays its captains a basic salary in the range of SG$ 250,000 to SG$ 350,000 each year. Like in the case of first officers, this amount depends on the type of aircraft flown and an individual’s experience although captains are paid SG$125 for each flying hour. Captains also have no guarantee regarding a minimum number of flying hours over a fixed duration.
Singapore’s captain salaries are some of the highest in the world and are surpassed by only a handful of airlines in the world, mostly in the Arab region.
