The Polish national team has made a strong start in the United Cup, an unofficial World Tennis Championship, with Hubert Hurkacz securing a crucial win against Britain’s Billy Harris. The 25-year-old Polish tennis star won the match in two sets, 7:6(3), 7:5, in a thrilling encounter that lasted 106 minutes.
This victory marks Hurkacz’s first singles win in 2025, and it brings Poland one step closer to the semifinals. According to Szymon Przybysz, Hurkacz’s last singles win was on September 25, 2024, when he defeated Marcos Giron in Tokyo.
Speaking to Eurosport, Dawid Żbik praised Hurkacz’s performance, stating that the win was not only important for advancing to the semifinals but also for building confidence. „Hubert Hurkacz gave Poland the first point in the match against Great Britain. A valuable win not only in terms of advancing to the semifinals but also in terms of building self-confidence. Hubi needed this impetus,” Żbik said.
Hurkacz’s win was met with excitement and relief from fans and pundits alike. Rafał Smoliński, a tennis blogger, noted that while the match was not easy, Hurkacz’s win was a crucial step forward. „It wasn’t an easy match, but Hubert Hurkacz won against Billy Harris 7:6(3), 7:5 and led Poland to take the lead. Hubi still has some work to do, but the most important thing is to keep playing and winning. Form will come,” Smoliński said.
Meanwhile, Paweł Matys from Sport.pl highlighted the intense nature of the match, stating that Hurkacz had to fight hard to secure the win. „Hubert Hurkacz played a thrilling match against Britain’s Billy Harris, eventually winning in two sets. In the first set, he even had to fight in a tie-break,” Matys wrote.
With Hurkacz’s win, Poland is now one step away from the semifinals. If they succeed in advancing, they will face Kazakhstan’s national team, with Iga Świątek set to play Jelena Rybakina and Hubert Hurkacz facing Aleksandr Shevchenko.
In terms of numbers, Hurkacz’s current ranking is 10th in the ATP ranking, while Harris ranks 125th. This win will undoubtedly give Hurkacz a much-needed boost in confidence and ranking points.
The United Cup, which takes place from December 29, 2024, to January 7, 2025, features 18 teams from around the world, with Poland aiming to improve on their runner-up finish last year.
