DENVER- The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA reports over 200 flight attendants and additional United Airlines (UA) employees fell ill after consuming holiday meals provided at Denver International Airport (DEN).

United Airlines Flight Attendant Sick
United Airlines implemented badge scanning procedures during meal distribution, enabling precise tracking of affected personnel. The airline maintains records of all employees who received holiday meals during the Christmas period.
The union instructs affected flight attendants to document their illness-related absences directly with supervisors and absence management teams. The organization emphasizes that Holiday Absence Certificates should not apply to these specific incidents.
Flight attendants experiencing attendance point penalties due to these absences should request immediate point removal through their supervisors. The union established specific protocols for crew members who reported sick while at outstation locations.
The C9 Grievance & Discipline Committee offers support for flight attendants facing disciplinary actions related to these absences. Affected personnel can access assistance through afaden.org or the general helpline’s option 3.
Chris Bruton, C9 Local President for Denver and Phoenix bases, oversees the union’s response to this incident. The union continues monitoring the situation and advocating for affected flight attendants’ rights.

The airline communicated an “unforeseen supply chain issue” to flight crews on Friday, impacting first-class meal service. Delta increased snack provisions on affected flights to maintain passenger satisfaction levels.

Similarly, in November 2024, A mass illness incident affected 34 passengers across two flights arriving at Tokyo’s Narita Airport from Guam on Thursday night. Japan Airlines Flight 942 reported 16 ill passengers, while United Airlines Flight 873 documented 18 cases.
The affected group included high school students traveling from Guam to Japan. Passengers experienced vomiting symptoms, with several cases developing before departure from Guam.
Fourteen passengers required immediate hospitalization upon arrival at Narita Airport. The remaining affected travelers managed their symptoms without seeking medical treatment.
Japan Airlines dismissed inflight meals as the cause, citing pre-boarding symptom onset among several passengers. This suggests a potential common source of contamination in Guam.
Narita Airport’s operations office and Chiba Prefecture health authorities launched investigations into the incident. Officials seek to identify the illness source and evaluate potential public health implications.
