A disruptive incident unfolded at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport when an American Airlines Boeing 737-800 collided with a United Airlines Boeing 787-10 during taxi operations.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirms the incident occurred at approximately 9:50 a.m. Wednesday, as American Airlines Flight 1979 struck the tail of United Flight 219. FAA reported the incident on its Aviation Accidents and Incidents and added:

American Airlines Flight 1979 struck the tail of United Airlines Flight 219 while the aircraft were taxiing on different taxiways at Chicago O’Hare International Airport around 9:50 a.m. local time on Wednesday, Jan. 8. The American Airlines Boeing 737-800 was heading to Los Angeles and the United Boeing 787 was heading to Honolulu.

Further, the FAA said that they would investigate the incident to find out how it occurred and how it could have been avoided.

The collision transpired while both aircraft navigated separate taxiways, with the American Airlines flight bound for Los Angeles and the United Airlines aircraft scheduled for Honolulu.

WGN Reporter Sean Lewis, who experienced the incident firsthand aboard the aircraft, described the impact as similar to hitting a pothole, noting that passenger reactions varied in their perception of the collision.

The Chicago Fire Department immediately dispatched emergency crews to runway 28R, though no injuries emerged from the incident.

Official Airline Remarks

Aviation officials later clarified that the wing tip of the American Airlines aircraft made contact with the United Airlines plane’s tail during the taxiing process.

The incident prompted swift operational changes. American Airlines removed the affected aircraft from service for a comprehensive inspection and arranged alternative transportation for its passengers.

The airline’s spokesperson confirmed that passengers disembarked normally at the gate and would continue their journey to Los Angeles on a replacement aircraft later that afternoon.

American Airlines Spokesperson said:

During taxi-out at Chicago (ORD), American Airlines flight 1979, with service from ORD to Los Angeles (LAX), made contact with a nearby aircraft on the taxiway. Customers deplaned normally at the gate and will re-depart on a replacement aircraft this afternoon. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience this caused.”

A United Airlines spokesperson provided additional details about the Wednesday morning collision at O’Hare International Airport, confirming that American Airlines Flight 1979 clipped the tail cone of their stationary Boeing 787 on the taxiway. The United aircraft carried 293 passengers and 10 crew members at the time of impact.

The spokesperson clarified that their Boeing 787, originally destined for Honolulu, remained stationary when the American Airlines aircraft made contact. United Airlines maintenance teams immediately initiated comprehensive damage assessments of the affected aircraft.

United Airlines also implemented contingency measures, withdrawing their aircraft for a thorough inspection. The airline arranged alternative transportation for passengers originally bound for Hawaii.
