LONDON— Wizz Air UK (W9) will withdraw all flights from the Austrian capital, ending services from both London Gatwick (LGW) and London Luton (LTN).
The airline confirmed that flights from London Gatwick and Bilbao (BIO) to Vienna will stop from October 26, 2025, while its final route from London Luton will cease on March 15, 2026. This decision directly impacts travelers planning trips to Austria’s capital, especially during its peak winter season.

Wizz Air UK Suspends Vienna Flights
Wizz Air launched its Vienna base in 2018, expanding routes across Europe. However, rising costs at Vienna International Airport (VIE) have made operations unsustainable. The airline cited increases in airport fees, taxes, and ground handling services as key reasons for the withdrawal.
Mauro Peneda, Managing Director of Wizz Air Malta, explained that while the decision was difficult, it was necessary to safeguard the airline’s long-term competitiveness. Staff at the Vienna base will be offered opportunities elsewhere in Wizz Air’s network.
The airline currently operates two daily flights from London Gatwick to Vienna, reduced to one during winter. These routes will gradually wind down before the complete exit in 2026.

What Happens if Your Flight is Cancelled
Passengers booked to Vienna (VIE) before October 26, 2025, will not be affected. Those scheduled to travel after this date will receive direct communication from the airline via the Wizz Air app or email.
Affected customers will be offered two options:
- A full refund in WIZZ credits to use on alternative routes.
- Rebooking on another Wizz Air flight.
Cash refunds will not be issued. Travelers still hoping to visit Vienna can use alternative airlines, including easyJet (U2), Ryanair (FR), and British Airways (BA), which continue to operate flights to the Austrian capital.
Wizz Air also reminded passengers of its flights to Budapest (BUD), just a 2.5-hour train ride from Vienna, and Bratislava (BTS), which is around an hour’s drive away.
Wider Cuts Beyond Vienna
The Vienna exit is part of a broader network reduction. Wizz Air will also suspend flights from Liverpool (LPL) to Budapest (BUD) on October 24, 2025, and from Glasgow (GLA) to Budapest on October 25, 2025.
These cancellations reflect a tightening focus on markets where Wizz Air sees stronger demand and less competition.

Ryanair CEO Criticism
Ryanair (FR) CEO Michael O’Leary has openly criticized Wizz Air’s strategy, predicting the airline may not survive as an independent carrier within the next three to five years.
He suggested European consolidation could see Wizz absorbed by a larger competitor.
Wizz Air, however, has dismissed such claims, stating its focus remains on connecting passengers to and from Central and Eastern Europe, where demand for low-cost air travel continues to grow.
