Oman Air (WY), the national carrier of Oman, made headlines in 2016 by purchasing a coveted early morning slot pair at London Heathrow Airport (LHR) for $75 million.
The slot was initially rumored to have been acquired from the Air France (AF)-KLM Group but was later confirmed to have been purchased from Kenya Airways (KQ). Early morning slots at Heathrow are highly valued due to their convenience for business travelers and connecting passengers.
The timing allows travelers to leave Muscat (MCT) in the early hours and arrive in London at 5:30 AM, enabling them to begin their day’s activities immediately or connect seamlessly to other destinations across Europe or the Americas.
The planned schedule involved a departure from MCT at 1:00 AM, arriving at LHR at 5:30 AM The return flight was scheduled to leave London at 8:30 AM, reaching Muscat by 7:00 PM.
Interestingly, Oman Air is no longer using this slot for operations. Its current LHR schedule includes an evening arrival at 6:25 PM and a departure back to MCT at 2:10 PM, utilizing a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
While the exact reasons for discontinuing the morning slot remain undisclosed, this shift demonstrates the evolving dynamics of airline operations and market demands.
This $75 million slot deal reflects not only the financial stakes but also the strategic importance of gaining access to Heathrow, a hub central to global business and travel.
