FLORIDA- United Airlines (UA), Delta Airlines (DL), and British Airways (BA) cancel flights to Tel Aviv (TLV), Israel beginning Thursday (August 1, 2024), according to Israeli media reports.

This decision comes amid escalating tensions in the region, despite earlier attempts by major carriers to resume services following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel.

Major Airlines Canceled Flights to Israel

The airlines’ move reflects growing concerns over safety and security in the area.

Israel’s military response to the Hamas attack, which led to its entry into Gaza, has created a volatile environment that continues to impact air travel.

Earlier this year, many airlines had cautiously restarted their Israel-bound flights after initial cancellations. However, the persistent risk of wider conflict in the Middle East has prompted a reevaluation of these routes.

Delta Air Lines Cancel Flights to Israel

Delta Air Lines suspending flights between New York-JFK and Tel Aviv until Friday, August 2, due to ongoing regional conflicts. The airline halts sales for DL234 on July 31 and August 1, and DL235 on August 1 and August 2. Delta will notify affected customers through the Fly Delta app and contact information in their reservations.

Passengers can still book seats on Delta’s partner airlines, Air France (AF) and EL AL Israel Airlines (LY), via its official website or Delta Reservations when available.

Delta continuously evaluates the security situation, basing operational decisions on security guidance and intelligence reports. The airline commits to communicating any updates promptly.

Delta extends its travel waiver to all customers who booked travel to or from Tel Aviv before August 14, 2024. This extension significantly expands the previous December 31, 2023 deadline for reservation changes, cancellations, or refund processing.

United Airlines Cancel Flights to Israel

United Airlines halts all flights to Tel Aviv indefinitely, citing security concerns. The suspension starts Wednesday evening with a flight from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). United normally operates two daily flights from Newark to Tel Aviv.

The airline’s decision reflects growing unease over the safety of air travel to Israel amid ongoing regional tensions. United’s spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to closely monitor the situation, prioritizing the safety of passengers and crew members in determining when to resume service.

This latest development follows announcements by other international carriers. Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, and Turkish Airlines have already declared their intention to halt flights to the region, citing the unstable situation.

EL AL continues its Operations

EL AL, Israel’s flagship carrier, maintains normal flight operations as of Wednesday night, contrasting with other airlines’ decisions to suspend services.

This announcement comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, with Iran and its allies threatening retaliation against Israel for the alleged assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

The apparent targeting of Haniyeh has significantly heightened the risk of a broader regional conflict.

Israel has not officially claimed responsibility for the strike in Iran, but Israeli officials have previously declared the elimination of top Hamas leaders, including Haniyeh, as a key objective in their war against the organization.
