American Airlines New 787-9P Routes

Before 2025, American Airlines already operated 59 Boeing 787 Dreamliners across its fleet, split between the 787-8 and 787-9 variants. To expand long-haul capabilities, the carrier ordered an additional 30 Boeing 787-9s, scheduled for delivery through 2029.

The latest version, designated 787-9P (with the “P” standing for “premium”), introduces a new passenger-focused configuration with 244 total seats. These aircraft carry:

  • 51 Flagship Suite business class seats with sliding doors and advanced tech, including eight Flagship Suite Preferred seats offering additional space.
  • 32 Premium Economy seats in a 2-3-2 layout, upgraded with Bluetooth audio, multiple charging ports, and improved in-flight entertainment.
  • 161 Economy seats in a 3-3-3 layout, creating a smaller, more comfortable cabin compared to American’s other widebodies.

The aircraft are also equipped with Viasat Wi-Fi, ensuring stronger and faster connectivity than older systems.

What This Means for Travelers

For passengers, the 787-9P delivers a more premium travel experience across multiple cabin classes.

The Flagship Suite offers one of the most private and tech-enhanced business class products in the U.S. market, while the upgraded Premium Economy brings more comfort and connectivity to long-haul flying.

On the operational side, the aircraft’s efficiency and high-end configuration make it well-suited for both transatlantic and South Pacific routes.

Travelers looking to experience the 787-9P consistently will find the Chicago (ORD) to London (LHR) service the most reliable option, OMAAT reported.
