WASHINGTON- United Airlines (UA) canceled a scheduled flight UA1762 from Washington Dulles (IAD) to Denver (DEN) operated by Boeing 777 on Saturday, April 5, 2025.

Chicago-based United Airlines operates almost 7-8 daily flights between Washinton and Denver with a mix of Boeing’s narrow and widebody fleet.

United 777 Burning Smell

A passenger who was supposed to travel with United on flight UA1762 reported this episode and said,

Flying from Dulles to Denver this past Friday, and we could smell burning from the gate. Gate agent said she highly recommends up to rebook our flights. A passenger asked if the flight was cancelled, and the gate agent responded “DID I SAY IT WAS CANCELLED? NO!”
Few minutes later firefighters show up and our flight was cancelled.

United Flight UA1762 passenger

According to FlightRadar24 data, United flight UA1762 was scheduled to depart from IAD at 8:30 AM local time. After covering a distance of 1,452 miles (2,337 KM) and flying for over three hours, the flight was expected to arrive in DEN at 10:28 AM local time.

It was scheduled to be operated by a 30.4-year-old Boeing 777-200, registered as N774UA.

Well, earlier on Thursday, April 3, 2025, a United Airlines flight from Key West (EYW) to Newark (EWR) made an emergency landing at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) on Thursday afternoon due to a fire in the cabin.

United Airlines Flight UA1513, a Boeing 737 that departed from Key West International Airport in Florida, landed safely at Dulles around 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, April 3.

The crew reported a fire in the cabin, necessitating the diversion from its original destination of Newark Liberty International Airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed it will investigate the incident.

United Airlines Flight 1513 landed safely at Washington Dulles International Airport around 4:45 p.m. local time Thursday, April 3, after the crew reported a fire in the cabin. The Boeing 737 departed Key West International Airport in Florida and was traveling to Newark Liberty International Airport. The FAA will investigate.

United Airlines released a statement explaining the situation: “Our flight from Key West to Newark landed safely at Washington Dulles yesterday to investigate light smoke venting from a galley oven. All passengers deplaned normally at the gate. We arranged for a different aircraft to take our customers to Newark.”

No injuries were reported during the incident. The airline successfully provided an alternative aircraft to complete the passengers’ journey to Newark.

Alaska Airlines Emergency Landing

Similarly, on April 2, 2025, An Alaska Airlines flight bound for Las Vegas made an emergency return to Portland International Airport Wednesday morning after crew and passengers detected fumes throughout the aircraft.

Alaska Flight 757 safely landed back at PDX around 9:50 a.m., shortly after takeoff. The Boeing 737-800, which is 14 years old, taxied back to the gate where emergency personnel were waiting.

“PDX Airport Fire & Rescue responded to an aircraft landing that had reported fumes in the cockpit/cabin at takeoff and returned to PDX,” said Allison Ferre, spokesperson for the Port of Portland. “The aircraft landed safely and there was no fire or ongoing safety threat, but the PDX fire crew made medical evaluation services available to crew and passengers.”

Nine individuals requested medical evaluation following the incident. The aircraft was subsequently turned over to Alaska Airlines’ maintenance team for inspection.

Alaska Airlines confirmed in a statement that passengers would continue their journey to Las Vegas on a replacement aircraft:

Crew members detected a strong odor on board Flight 757 from Portland (PDX) to Las Vegas (LAS) shortly after takeoff. As a precaution, the pilots returned to PDX where medical professionals met the aircraft at the gate and evaluated crew members. The aircraft was removed from service for inspection, and we are reaccommodating our guests on a new aircraft. We apologize to our guests for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

The cause of the fumes has not yet been disclosed.
