Qatar Airways Boeing Order

On May 14, 2025, Qatar Airways (QR) signed a $200 billion agreement with Boeing to purchase 160 widebody jets, comprising a mix of Boeing 777X and 787 aircraft, during a high-profile ceremony in Doha (DOH).

The deal, which includes firm orders for 160 jets, marks the largest widebody aircraft order in Boeing’s history and underscores Qatar Airways’ (QR) ambition to maintain one of the world’s most advanced and efficient fleets.

The signing occurred during U.S. President Donald Trump’s Middle East tour, which included stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, emphasizing aviation and defense as key areas for U.S.-Gulf economic partnerships.

The order aligns with Qatar Airways’ (QR) goal to modernize its long-haul fleet, replacing aging Boeing 777s and Airbus A380s while enhancing capacity on high-demand routes through its hub at Hamad International Airport (DOH).

The Boeing 777X, including the 777-9 variant, is expected to become the airline’s flagship, featuring advanced fuel efficiency and a potential new first-class product. The 787 Dreamliner, likely including the 787-10 variant, offers flexibility for medium- to long-haul routes, such as Doha (DOH) to London (LHR) or Bangkok (BKK).

This deal builds on Qatar Airways’ (QR) existing order for 94 Boeing 777X aircraft, including 60 777-9s and 34 777-8 Freighters, solidifying its role as a launch customer for the 777X program.

Strategic Order

The $200 billion order is a pivotal step in Qatar Airways’ (QR) strategy to meet growing global demand for long-haul travel, with delivery slots for widebody jets booked well into the 2030s due to high demand.

By securing this order, the airline ensures its ability to expand capacity from 50 million to 80 million passengers annually by 2030, reinforcing Hamad International Airport (DOH) as a global hub connecting 180 destinations.

The deal also reflects Qatar’s diplomatic efforts to strengthen ties with the United States, timed strategically with Trump’s visit to Doha (DOH) to meet Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.

Boeing benefits significantly from this agreement, which provides a major boost amid certification delays for the 777X, now expected in 2026. The order enhances Boeing’s position in the Middle East, a region projected to rely heavily on twin-aisle jets like the 777X and 787, which will comprise 44% of regional fleets over the next two decades.

For Qatar Airways (QR), the deal ensures operational flexibility, fuel efficiency, and an elevated passenger experience with advanced cabin designs, including the Qsuite Next Gen business class set to debut on the 777-9.

Trump’s Middle East Tour

President Trump’s Middle East visit, spanning May 13–16, 2025, focused on securing major economic agreements across aviation, defense, and infrastructure.

In Saudi Arabia, Trump announced a $600 billion investment commitment to the U.S., including a $142 billion arms deal for state-of-the-art military equipment, described as the largest defense sales agreement in history.

The deal includes 1,000 AIM-120C-8 air-to-air missiles built by RTX Corp, enhancing Saudi Arabia’s fighter jet capabilities and supporting U.S. foreign policy goals in the Gulf.

In Qatar, the Boeing order was a centerpiece of Trump’s visit, highlighting the intersection of commercial aviation and geopolitics. The UAE, another stop on the tour, is expected to announce additional investments, with total corporate deals across the three nations potentially reaching $3 trillion.

These agreements aim to bolster U.S. industries while deepening economic ties with Gulf states, which are investing heavily in aviation and defense to diversify their economies.

Current Fleet

As of May 2025, Qatar Airways (QR) operates a fleet of approximately 259 aircraft, including 64 Boeing 777s, 51 Boeing 787s, 58 Airbus A350s, and 8 Airbus A380s, alongside narrowbody aircraft like the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 MAX 8.

The airline has 199 aircraft on order, including 50 Airbus A321neos, 18 Airbus A350-1000s, 25 Boeing 737 MAX 10s, 60 Boeing 777-9s, 11 Boeing 787-9s, and 34 Boeing 777-8 Freighters. The new order for 160 Boeing jets will further phase out older 777s and A380s, ensuring a younger, more efficient fleet.

The 777X, with its 426-passenger capacity and 7,295-nautical-mile range, will enable Qatar Airways (QR) to expand ultra-long-haul routes, while the 787’s versatility supports high-density regional routes.

Despite certification delays for the 777X, Qatar Airways’ (QR) confidence in Boeing underscores a long-term partnership, with the airline leveraging its record-breaking $1.7 billion profit in 2023–2024 to fund this investment.
