The service will operate 3 times a week- Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, through March, using the airline’s newly acquired Airbus A321LR aircraft.
With an approximate flight time of eight hours, the new route enhances accessibility to Florida, a popular winter destination for Icelandic travelers.
This expansion adds Miami as Icelandair’s 19th North American destination and its second Florida gateway, alongside Orlando (MCO).
Known for its vibrant beaches, cultural diversity, and dynamic nightlife, Miami offers travelers an attractive alternative to other Florida cities.
Bogi Nils Bogason, President and CEO of Icelandair, expressed enthusiasm for the new route, highlighting its role in strengthening Icelandair’s European and North American network.
The airline’s strategic positioning via Iceland allows seamless connections to 34 European destinations, enhancing travel convenience for passengers.
Icelandair and Southwest Strategic Partnership
On January 15, Icelandair (FI) and Southwest Airlines (WN) formalized a strategic partnership, enabling smoother connections across their respective networks.
Initially, the collaboration launches with connections via Baltimore/Washington International (BWI), with additional gateways in Nashville (BNA) and Denver (DEN) set to follow.
This agreement offers expanded transatlantic travel options and facilitates streamlined itineraries between Iceland, Europe, and North America.
Southwest Airlines, the largest domestic carrier in the U.S., selected Icelandair as its inaugural international airline partner.
The integration enables Icelandair passengers to access Southwest’s extensive U.S. network, while Southwest customers benefit from direct routes to Iceland and beyond.
Tómas Ingason, Chief Commercial Officer of Icelandair, emphasized the value of this partnership in offering customers enhanced travel flexibility.
Similarly, Ryan Green, Executive Vice President of Southwest Airlines, noted the significance of Icelandair’s expertise in shaping Southwest’s evolving airline partnerships.
Icelandair New Airbus A321LR
In December 2024, Icelandair took delivery of its first Airbus aircraft, Airbus A321LR, marking a milestone in its 87-year history.
This aircraft is the first of 3 scheduled for delivery before summer 2025 and is part of the airline’s fleet renewal initiative. The A321LR, leased from SMBC Aviation Capital Limited, will replace the Boeing 757, which has served as Icelandair’s fleet backbone for decades.
Designed for efficiency and sustainability, the A321LR offers a seating capacity of 187 passengers, including 22 in Saga Premium and 165 in Economy.
With Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, the aircraft achieves up to 30% greater fuel efficiency compared to the B757, reducing CO2 emissions and operational costs.
Its extended range of 4,000 nautical miles (7,400 km) ensures uninterrupted service to existing destinations.
Bogi Nils Bogason highlighted the A321LR’s potential to enhance Icelandair’s operational model, expand route options, and support environmental sustainability. Airbus representatives also underscored the aircraft’s advanced capabilities in lowering fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, and noise levels.
