DUBAI– flydubai (FZ) has launched direct flights from Dubai International Airport (DXB) to Iași International Airport (IAS), becoming the first carrier from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to operate this route.

With the new twice-weekly service to Iași (IAS), flydubai expands its network in Romania to two destinations, joining its well-established operations in Bucharest (OTP). The airline is also increasing frequencies on the Bucharest route to a triple-daily service, bringing total weekly flights between the UAE and Romania to 21.

flyDubai New Flight to Lasi

The inaugural flight to Iași (IAS) received a traditional water cannon salute and an official welcome from airport authorities, government representatives, and media.

This milestone strengthens connectivity between Romania’s cultural capital and Dubai (DXB), a major global hub.

According to Jeyhun Efendi, Divisional Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations and E-commerce at flydubai, Romania has been a growing market since the airline began serving Bucharest in 2012.

Passenger numbers have increased by an average of 16% annually, supporting the decision to boost frequencies and add a new destination.

Efendi noted that opening Iași to direct air service provides travelers with more convenient access to Romania’s business and cultural landscape.

Airport and Regional Significance

Romeo Vatră, General Manager of Iași International Airport (IAS), emphasized the importance of this launch, highlighting that Iași is now the only airport in the Moldova region with direct flights to the UAE.

He welcomed the partnership with flydubai, noting the route would benefit both passengers and the regional economy by positioning Iași as an international gateway.

Iași is known as Romania’s cultural capital, offering attractions such as the Palace of Culture, which houses multiple museums, the Italian-Renaissance style Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Vasile Alecsandri National Theatre, Romania’s oldest.

The new flights provide easier access for tourists and business travelers to explore these landmarks.

Broader European Network Growth

The Iași service is part of flydubai’s wider European expansion. On 17 September, the airline began flights to Chișinău in Moldova (KIV).

By December, Vilnius (VNO) in Lithuania and Riga (RIX) in Latvia will also join the network, further strengthening flydubai’s presence in Eastern and Northern Europe.

Lasi Travel Guide

Iasi, located in the eastern part of Romania near the Bucovina region and the border with Moldova, is an underrated yet fascinating destination. For many travelers, it’s also one of the cheapest entry points into the country thanks to Iasi International Airport (IAS).

Despite limited coverage in popular guidebooks, Iasi (IAS) offers an impressive mix of culture, history, and vibrant city life. Known as Romania’s second-largest city, it is often considered the country’s cultural capital.

Exploring Romania’s Cultural Capital

Iasi has long been a center of education and culture. Home to the oldest university in Romania and the oldest national theatre, it has played a key role in shaping the nation’s intellectual and artistic identity.

The city’s architecture reflects its layered past, blending medieval monasteries, neoclassical and baroque landmarks, and communist-era structures.

Beyond history, Iasi thrives as a young, lively student city with countless cafes, parks, and cultural venues. Its atmosphere balances old-world charm with modern vibrancy, making it ideal for visitors who want both heritage and contemporary urban life.

Architectural Highlights

Palace of Culture

One of the city’s main attractions, the Palace of Culture, built in Neo-Gothic style, is an architectural masterpiece. Construction began in 1906 under Romania’s first king, but it was not completed until after World War I. Today, it houses four museums: History, Ethnography, Science, and Art.

Saint Nicholas Church

Located near the Palace of Culture, Saint Nicholas Church is the oldest religious building in Iasi. Despite its small size, it showcases striking medieval architecture and holds deep historical significance.

Three Holy Hierarchs Monastery

On Stefan cel Mare Boulevard, this monastery stands out for its intricate exterior stone carvings and frescoes. It is one of Iasi’s most visited religious landmarks.

Metropolitan Cathedral

As Romania’s largest Orthodox church, the Metropolitan Cathedral attracts worshippers and pilgrims year-round. Visitors can witness active services and observe Romania’s living religious traditions.

Communist Legacy

During the communist era, Iasi underwent major changes. Farms were nationalized, peasants were relocated into Soviet-style apartments, and industries were developed around the city. After the regime’s collapse, many factories were abandoned, leaving behind stark reminders of that period.

For travelers interested in brutalist architecture and communist history, Iasi’s Nicolina industrial zone offers a glimpse into Romania’s past. At the same time, the city has transformed into a youthful and modern hub.

Parks and Green Spaces

Copou Park

Established in 1834, Copou Park is one of the oldest public gardens in Romania and a symbolic place for Iasi’s residents. It’s perfect for leisurely walks.

Botanical Garden

Founded in 1856 and managed by the university, the Iasi Botanical Garden is the largest in Romania. Its rose gardens and greenhouses with tropical plants make it a highlight for nature lovers.

Day Trips from Iasi

Painted Monasteries of Bucovina

A UNESCO World Heritage site, these monasteries are known for their vibrant frescoes. Located around Suceava, about three hours from Iasi, they are best explored by car.

Chisinau, Moldova (KIV)

Just across the border, Moldova’s capital is a full-day excursion from Iasi. Chisinau is especially interesting for travelers intrigued by Soviet history and Eastern European culture.

Local Cuisine

Iasi is a great place to sample traditional Romanian food:

  • Mămăligă: Cornmeal dish similar to polenta, often served with cheese and sour cream.
  • Mici (Mititei): Grilled minced meat rolls, seasoned with garlic and spices.
  • Plăcinte: Pastries with sweet or savory fillings, such as cheese, cabbage, or apples.

Restaurants like Mamma Mia offer authentic local dishes at fair prices, with lively terraces in summer.

Getting to Iasi

  • Air Travel: Iasi International Airport (IAS) connects the city with major European hubs via full-service and low-cost airlines.
  • Trains: Reliable rail links connect Iasi with Bucharest and beyond, including Budapest and Chisinau.
  • Buses: Iasi’s main bus station, opposite the train station, provides routes across Romania and to Moldova.

When to Visit

Iasi has a temperate-continental climate. Summers are warm (20–30°C), while winters are cold with snow. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal for pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

Sustainable Travel in Iasi

Travelers can support the local community by choosing family-owned guesthouses, dining at local restaurants, and buying regional products. Walking or using public transport reduces environmental impact, while exploring on foot allows a deeper connection with the city.
