Finnair to Cancel 100 Flights

On May 5, 2025, the Finnish Aviation Union (IAU) will stage a four-hour industrial action at Helsinki Airport (HEL), Finnair’s (AY) primary hub.

The strike, which will occur in staggered shifts, will disrupt critical operations, including ground handling, cargo services, and baggage processing.

Unlike a fixed-time protest, the varied timing amplifies its impact across the day’s flight schedule.

Finnair has preemptively canceled approximately 100 flights, affecting around 7,500 passengers.

The cancellations primarily target domestic and regional routes, though some international flights may also face delays or adjustments.

Jaakko Schildt, Finnair’s Chief Operating Officer, expressed regret over the disruptions, stating, “We are very sorry about the ongoing changes to our customers’ travel plans due to these industrial actions.”

The airline is actively working to mitigate the impact by rebooking passengers on alternative flights.

However, the scale of cancellations may delay rerouting, as available seats are limited during this busy travel period.

Passenger Guidance

Finnair urges affected passengers to verify their updated itineraries through official digital channels.

Travelers who prefer not to accept a rerouted itinerary may cancel their booking and apply for a full refund for the unused portion of the ticket.

Customers flying on 5 May, even if their flights remain operational, are advised to check in early, allow additional time at the airport, and pack essential items like medications in their carry-on baggage due to potential delays in baggage handling.

To ease the pressure on customer service, passengers are encouraged to modify their itineraries themselves using the self-service features available online or via the Finnair app. This includes the ability to select alternate flight options, subject to availability.

Future Disruptions on the Horizon

The IAU has announced a similar four-hour strike on May 16, 2025, at Helsinki Airport (HEL), signaling potential further disruptions for Finnair (AY) and other airlines.

While Finnair has not yet confirmed cancellations for that date, the airline is monitoring the situation and expects comparable operational challenges.

Travelers planning flights around mid-May should stay updated via Finnair’s website or the Helsinki Airport (HEL) flight status page, managed by Finavia, to track real-time developments.
