SINGAPORE – Etihad Airways (EY) marked a historic moment on February 2, 2025, as its Airbus A380 touched down at Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) for the first time. This milestone strengthens connectivity between the UAE and Singapore, a key destination in Etihad’s global network.
The inaugural flight, EY498, departed Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport (AUH) on February 1 at 22:31 and landed in Singapore after a 6-hour, 57-minute journey. The return flight departed from Singapore Changi at 19:44 the following day, arriving back in Abu Dhabi at 22:33.
Moreover, the launch flight was operated by an A380-800 with registration A6-API. This aircraft has been primarily serving London, New York, and Paris and will now operate daily flights between Abu Dhabi and Singapore. Previously operated with a Boeing 777-300ER or a Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner, the route now benefits from the A380’s increased capacity and premium services.
A380 Enhances Travel Experience
The introduction of the Airbus A380 increases weekly seat capacity by over 700, representing a 28% increase in available seats. The aircraft features a total of 486 seats, including:
- The Residence – The world’s only three-room suite in the sky.
- Nine First Apartments – Offering private suites with luxurious amenities.
- 70 Business Studios – Providing enhanced comfort for business travelers.
- 405 Economy Smart Seats – Designed for a superior travel experience.
The upper deck also features The Lobby, an exclusive lounge area for First and Business class passengers. This move aligns with Etihad’s broader strategy of increasing frequencies and upgrading aircraft on key routes.
“Bringing the A380 to Singapore, along with our broader network expansion plans—including increased frequency on key routes—demonstrates our strong growth momentum in Asia. This added capacity reflects the growing demand for travel to and from Singapore.”
Arik De, Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer of Etihad Airways.
Etihad’s Expanding A380 Network, Growing Asian Presence
Singapore becomes the fourth major city in Etihad’s A380 network, joining:
- London Heathrow (LHR)
- New York JFK (JFK)
- Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG)
Etihad now operates six A380s, reflecting the airline’s commitment to enhancing passenger experiences on high-demand routes.
The UAE and Singapore share strong ties in trade, culture, and business, making this new service particularly significant. The increased capacity not only supports tourism but also strengthens business connections in industries such as aviation, energy, and technology.
