ATLANTA— A Delta Air Lines (DL) passenger has sparked debate after objecting to a seatmate watching a sex scene from a Delta-provided in-flight movie in clear view of his eight-year-old daughter.

The incident occurred on a flight operated from a U.S. airport, with the content streamed via Delta’s seatback entertainment system, PYOK reported.

Delta Passenger Complaints Over Explicit Scene

The movie in question, 1923 — a Paramount+ drama starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren — has been part of Delta’s licensed entertainment catalogue since 2023. Several airlines, including British Airways (BA) and LATAM (LA), also offer the show.

The father expressed concern online, prompting some commenters to suggest reporting the matter to law enforcement for possible child protection violations.

The passenger, posting on LinkedIn, described his frustration at seeing “a full-blown sex scene” play out on the screen ahead of his three children, noting it came from Delta’s own entertainment library.

Some users responded by urging him to contact the police, suggesting the seatmate’s actions could be interpreted as exposing minors to explicit material.

The passenger later clarified he bore no ill will toward the man, suggesting he might have been unaware of the upcoming scene or unsure how to stop playback quickly. He called it a “dumb unforced error” by Delta for making such scenes available without safeguards.

Delta contacted the family after the post gained attention. A representative acknowledged the concern and explained that airlines are often unable to edit sexually explicit scenes due to licensing restrictions from studios, leaving them with “take it or leave it” choices.

How Airlines Source and Edit Entertainment

Historically, movies and TV shows for in-flight entertainment were edited by third-party distributors to remove content deemed overly sexual or violent.

Today, major distributors like Stellar Entertainment, working with Qantas (QF), EVA Air (BR), and Thai Airways (TG), and Spafax, serving British Airways (BA), Emirates (EK), and Qatar Airways (QR), still offer curated content packages.

Delta relies exclusively on Florida-based Touch Inflight Solutions, which also supplies Air New Zealand (NZ), WestJet (WS), and SAS (SK). North American and European carriers typically accept more unedited content than Middle Eastern airlines, which often request heavier censorship.

One notable step to limit accidental exposure to sensitive scenes comes from El Al (LY). In 2024, the airline added privacy filters to seatback screens across its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet, reducing viewing angles so only the intended passenger can see the screen.

This aims to balance modern high-definition screens with protection against unwanted viewing by nearby passengers.
