NEW YORK- A Delta Air Lines (DL) flight originating from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City (JFK) underwent an emergency return to the airport on Friday morning.

The flight crew noticed a “flight deck indication related to the right-wing emergency exit slide, as well as a sound from near the right wing,” as Delta reported to NPR.

Delta New York Emergency

The aircraft, a Boeing 767-300 delivered to Delta in 1990, was en route to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) but had to turn back to JFK approximately an hour into Flight 520, as indicated by FlightAware, a flight tracking website.

A passenger onboard the flight, requesting anonymity while still in transit, shared with NPR that a pronounced noise emanated from the plane, making it challenging to discern announcements from the cockpit.

The passenger felt “overwhelmed” and “deeply frightened” by the incident.

FlightAware imagery shows that the aircraft flew a circuitous route over the tristate area before eventually returning to JFK.

Official Remarks

“Given our unwavering commitment to the safety of our passengers and crew, Delta flight crews utilized their extensive training and adhered to protocols to bring the aircraft back to JFK,” Delta informed NPR in a statement. The airline stated that the flight crew declared an emergency with air traffic control to obtain clearance to return to JFK. Subsequently, the aircraft landed safely and taxied to a gate under its own power.

Delta clarified to NPR that there were no pressurization issues aboard the aircraft. It indicated that the plane had been withdrawn from service and would undergo a comprehensive evaluation.

Typically, an aircraft remains operational for an average of 30 years before retirement, according to Flexport, a global logistics workflow company. The aircraft involved in Friday’s incident is approximately 34 years old, with its scheduled expiration previously set for May 2028, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

“Delta Air Lines Flight 520 returned safely to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York around 8:35 a.m. local time on Friday, April 26, after the crew reported a vibration,” the FAA noted that an investigation will be conducted.

In June of the preceding year, Flight 520, utilizing a Boeing 767-300 aircraft operating between JFK and LAX, encountered technical issues necessitating an emergency landing in Utah.
