LONDON- British Airways (BA) has begun testing a new Premium Economy product on its Boeing 787-9, currently undergoing certification at its maintenance base. The aircraft has been parked at the airline’s Cardiff (CWL) site since July, while the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reviews the updated seating.

The refreshed World Traveller Plus cabin is expected to roll out across selected aircraft after approval. Early images show significant updates to design and comfort, though the overall layout and capacity appear unchanged from the current 42-seat configuration.

British Airways New Premium Economy

The reworked Premium Economy cabin retains the familiar 2-3-2 seating layout. Upholstery updates include dark navy fabric with black leather headrests, contrast stitching, and light grey seat backs paired with darker armrests.

The most noticeable enhancement is the addition of fixed winged headrests, designed to improve both privacy and support on long-haul flights.

While the cabin refresh does not expand seat numbers, British Airways is focusing on passenger comfort through subtle but effective changes. The overall aesthetic appears more modern, aligning with what travelers expect in today’s Premium Economy products.

Possible Recaro Seat Upgrade

Industry observer, Rob Burgess, Editor of Head for Points, suggests the updated seat may be the Recaro R4, already in service with Cathay Pacific (CX) as part of its Aria Premium Economy cabin. British Airways has previously used Recaro seating in this class, making the R4 a likely successor.

Unlike other carriers that feature the R4, the British Airways version does not appear to include built-in reading lights.

The in-flight entertainment (IFE) screens are also smaller than those offered by competitors. Estimated at 12–13 inches, they are comparable to BA’s current system, but notably smaller than the 15.6-inch displays found on rival airlines.

The cabin size seems to remain consistent with the existing World Traveller Plus section, capped at 42 seats.

Based on lavatory placement and row configuration, there is no indication of expansion. This decision suggests BA is prioritizing a refresh over a full-scale redesign of the Premium Economy footprint on its 787-9 fleet.

Incremental Upgrade Rather Than Transformation

British Airways last refreshed its Premium Economy cabin more than six years ago. While the new updates mark an overdue improvement, the restrained approach may leave some passengers underwhelmed compared with offerings from competitors.

The upgraded seat styling and winged headrests are welcome additions, but smaller screens and missing features highlight a cautious strategy rather than a bold step forward.
