Airbus A321XLR Maritime Patrol Aircraft

The A321 MPA (Maritime Patrol Aircraft) is a militarized version of the Airbus A321XLR, tailored to meet the operational requirements of the French Navy.

It will play a key role in anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare, intelligence gathering, and surveillance missions.

The aircraft’s design emphasizes long-range endurance, high maneuverability, and low-altitude operational capability.

Airbus Defence and Space has extensive experience in converting commercial aircraft for military applications.

The A321 MPA (Maritime Patrol Aircraft) benefits from the proven reliability of the A320 Family, which has over 10,000 aircraft in service.

The company’s success with the A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) further reinforces its expertise in military aircraft conversions.

The A321 MPA (Maritime Patrol Aircraft) will feature cutting-edge sensors and mission systems developed in collaboration with Thales. Key onboard systems include:

  • Next-generation radar with active electronically scanned array (AESA) antennas.
  • Acoustic systems utilizing passive and active sonar buoys.
  • Electronic warfare and electro-optical sensors for enhanced situational awareness.
  • Magnetic anomaly detection (MAD) for submarine tracking.
  • Self-protection systems to counter potential threats.

The aircraft will also integrate satellite communications and an advanced weapons suite, including torpedoes and the upcoming Future Anti-Ship Missile (FMAN).

Its large cargo bay and modular mission system architecture ensure adaptability to emerging threats.
