AUCKLAND- Air New Zealand (NZ) has revealed its new uniform collection, marking a significant evolution in the airline’s visual identity. The new collection represents Air New Zealand’s deep pride in its homeland and rich cultural traditions.

With striking patterns, vibrant colors, and elegant craftsmanship, these uniforms present New Zealand’s finest attributes to global audiences. Acclaimed New Zealand fashion designer Emilia Wickstead revealed her fresh uniform designs for Air New Zealand (NZ) on Thursday, April 11, marking the first update to the airline’s uniform in 14 years.

Air New Zealand consistently embraces progress rather than complacency. The airline prides itself on boldness, celebrating its distinctive qualities, and empowering its staff.

This new collection embodies the carrier’s core values—blending innovation with cultural heritage and fostering a profound sense of pride and connection.

The uniform, which will be worn by 6,000 Air New Zealand (NZ) employees globally, reflects the airline’s dedication to staff empowerment. Beyond serving as a symbol of Air New Zealand’s distinctive global position, the uniform also represents Aotearoa’s (New Zealand’s) contemporary identity and values.

Renowned designer Emilia Wickstead partnered with tā moko artist Te Rangitu Netana to create a collection that strongly represents Aotearoa’s unique cultural identity.

Designer Emilia Wickstead described the project as “incredibly personal,” noting that respect for New Zealand’s heritage and unique identity guided her work.

“I wanted to create a uniform that empowers individuals and inspires pride in all who wear it and see it.”

Te Rangitu Netana, who created the collection’s distinctive prints, spoke to the cultural significance of his contribution.

“Each print is a story, deeply rooted in the traditions and values of Aotearoa. As a Māori artist on the world stage, I feel a deep responsibility in ensuring our culture is represented in a way that is authentic and meaningful.”

Standout Collection Pieces

Several signature items define the new collection. “The Fine Print – Dress” demonstrates Wickstead’s design expertise with its detailed kōwhai print, while “The Collective Thread – Shirt” features striking purapura whetū patterns designed for versatility across cabin crew and ground staff roles.

The collection also introduces an Ie Faitaga option for Pasifika team members, reflecting the airline’s commitment to cultural inclusivity. Pilot uniforms receive a contemporary update with bold pinstripe suits featuring kiwi feather lining, symbolizing leadership.

Air New Zealand (NZ) Chief Executive Greg Foran emphasized the deeper meaning behind the uniform.

Implementation Timeline

The airline will begin testing the new uniforms in May 2025 through an onboard wearer trial. Following testing and employee feedback, the uniforms will roll out across Air New Zealand’s entire workforce by 2026.
