LOS ANGELES- An Air New Zealand (NZ) flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to Auckland (AKL) was forced to return shortly after takeoff due to a technical issue on October 5, 2025. The Boeing 777 aircraft, operating flight NZ3, experienced problems affecting both the air conditioning and in-flight entertainment systems.

The airline confirmed the issue prompted the crew to return to Los Angeles as a safety precaution. All passengers are being rebooked on the next available services while the aircraft undergoes inspection.

Air New Zealand Flight Returns to LAX

Air New Zealand (NZ) flight NZ3 departed Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) for Auckland Airport (AKL) before the crew detected a fault in the aircraft’s power system.

According to reports shared by a relative of a passenger on board to RNZ news agency, the cabin lost air conditioning and entertainment soon after takeoff, with the power system reportedly overheating.

The flight NZ3 was operated by Boeing 777-300ER, registered as ZK-OKS. Further, it is an 11.1-year-old aircraft and is powered by two GE90 engines, one of the most powerful engines in the world.

Chief Operating Officer Alex Marren confirmed that engineers were consulted during the flight to troubleshoot the malfunction, but the issue could not be resolved in the air. As a result, the pilots made the decision to return to Los Angeles. According to RNZ, the aircraft landed safely, and passengers were provided assistance upon arrival.

Air New Zealand emphasized that safety remains its top priority. The airline stated that while the incident caused delays, all actions taken were in line with standard safety procedures to ensure passenger well-being.

After landing back at LAX, passengers were supported by ground staff and rebooked on alternative flights. Air New Zealand’s engineering team began a detailed inspection to identify and rectify the fault before the aircraft returned to service.

Although the malfunction did not pose a direct safety threat, the airline opted for a precautionary return to avoid any escalation. Air New Zealand continues to monitor the situation closely and has apologized to customers for the disruption.

Safest Airline in the World

Air New Zealand maintains a strong safety record and a structured response plan for in-flight technical issues.

Similar Incident

Last month, an Air New Zealand (NZ) flight from Auckland Airport (AKL) to Perth Airport (PER) returned to its departure point shortly after takeoff due to an engineering issue.

Flight NZ175, which departed around 12:35 PM local time, turned back about an hour into the journey. The aircraft landed safely at Auckland, where the airline’s technical team began inspecting the issue.

Air New Zealand confirmed the return was a precautionary decision. By flying back to Auckland (AKL), the airline ensured that its in-house engineers could handle the issue promptly and under optimal conditions. The carrier stated that passenger safety was never compromised, and crew members kept travelers informed throughout the flight.

The airline’s Chief Operating Officer, Alex Marren, said the decision aligned with standard aviation safety protocols. “Our engineering team in Auckland is best placed to carry out the necessary repairs, so the decision was made to return the aircraft to ensure it can safely re-enter service as soon as possible.”

As a direct result of the diversion, the corresponding return flight NZ176 from Perth (PER) to Auckland (AKL) on September 3, 2025 was cancelled. This affected passengers awaiting departure in Perth, prompting the airline to arrange alternative travel options.

Air New Zealand stated that it is working to minimize onward travel disruptions and provide the earliest possible rebookings.
