This decision followed a series of discussions among key stakeholders, including Air Kerala executives, the Airports Authority of India (AAI), and local representatives.

A major highlight of the collaboration is the plan to establish an aviation academy in Mysuru. This initiative aims to nurture local talent and strengthen aviation infrastructure.

The academy will feature an ATR-72-600 simulator, offering world-class training for aspiring aviation professionals. Preliminary talks with relevant firms are already underway to bring this project to fruition.

Kannur: First International Base

Air Kerala, India’s newest airline venture, has revealed plans to commence operations from Kannur International Airport, marking a strategic expansion in India’s aviation sector. The carrier made this announcement on December 30, 2024, establishing Kannur as its primary operational base.

The airline has submitted the required documentation to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for operational clearance. Their strategic roadmap outlines ATR turboprop operations for domestic routes beginning in the second quarter of 2025, with plans to transition to narrow-body aircraft later.

Air Kerala’s partnership agreement with Kannur International Airport Limited establishes a significant operational presence at the facility. The initial network strategy targets destinations within 90 minutes of flying time from Kannur, focusing on regional connectivity enhancement.

Air Kerala Chairman Afi Ahmad underscores the KIAL partnership’s importance: “Our partnership with KIAL allows us to connect key regions domestically while preparing for international operations. Together, we aim to offer reliable, affordable, and efficient travel options to passengers.”

Kannur International Airport’s existing infrastructure provides operational advantages for Air Kerala’s establishment. The airport management has committed support for the airline’s base development, recognizing potential mutual growth opportunities.

The airline’s international expansion plans target key destinations across Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. Domestic routes will connect major metropolitan centers including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad with tier-two cities, enhancing regional air connectivity across India.
