MUMBAI- Five passengers and two crew members on board Air India’s London Heathrow (LHR) to Mumbai (BOM) flight AI130 reported dizziness and nausea mid-flight on June 23, 2025.

The incident occurred during the aircraft’s journey from London Heathrow Airport to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.

The airline has launched an investigation and notified the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Air India Crew, Passengers Fall Sick

According to Air India’s official statement, passengers and crew aboard flight AI130 began feeling unwell at various points during the nearly nine-hour flight.

The symptoms included dizziness and nausea, though no cause has been publicly identified as of now. Despite the onboard health concerns, the Boeing 787 aircraft landed safely in Mumbai.

Medical teams were deployed on the ground, and those who continued to feel ill were transported to the airport’s medical room for further assessment. The situation was reported promptly to India’s aviation regulator, the DGCA, which is monitoring developments.

Air India has not disclosed the total number of passengers and crew on the affected flight.

DGCA Cracks Down on Air India

In a related development, the DGCA has taken serious enforcement action against Air India over broader systemic issues concerning crew management.

Citing repeated violations in pilot scheduling and oversight, the regulator has warned that future infractions may lead to suspension or cancellation of the airline’s operating license.

Following a June 20 enforcement order, the DGCA directed Air India to immediately remove three senior officials:

  • Choorah Singh – Divisional VP, Integrated Operations Control Centre (IOCC)
  • Pinky Mittal – Chief Manager-DOPS, Crew Scheduling
  • Payal Arora – Crew Scheduling Planning

The regulator identified “systemic failures in compliance monitoring, crew scheduling, and internal accountability” as critical weaknesses within the airline’s operations. It further criticized the absence of disciplinary action against those responsible for repeated lapses.

Regulatory Pressure Intensifies After Fatal 787 Crash

Air India’s ongoing operational issues are under heightened scrutiny following a deadly crash on June 12. A London-bound Boeing 787 from Ahmedabad crashed shortly after takeoff, killing 241 of 242 people on board and more than 30 on the ground. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is currently probing the cause.

The DGCA’s final warning underscores its zero-tolerance stance: any future violations related to crew scheduling or licensing may result in severe penalties, including full suspension of Air India’s license.

In response to the DGCA’s enforcement actions, Air India stated that the three officials named in the regulator’s order have been relieved of their duties. The company added that its Chief Operations Officer will now directly supervise the IOCC.

“Air India is committed to full regulatory compliance and safety,” the airline said. “We are implementing corrective measures and enhancing internal accountability.”
