MUMBAI— Tata-owned Air India Group (AI) today confirmed plans to begin commercial services from Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI) when the airport opens its first operational phase. Operated by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd., NMI will serve as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s second major aviation hub.

In the initial rollout, Air India Express (IX), the group’s low-cost carrier, will launch 20 daily departures—equivalent to 40 Air Traffic Movements (ATMs)—linking NMI to 15 Indian cities. The airline plans to scale its presence significantly over the next two years, making the airport a critical base for both domestic and international connectivity.

Air India Navi Mumbai Airport Flights

The Air India group is positioning Navi Mumbai International Airport as a cornerstone in its long-term growth plan.

By mid-2026, operations are expected to grow to 90 daily departures (180 ATMs), including up to five international flights.

By 2027, the number could reach 140 daily departures (280 ATMs), strengthening NMI’s role as a global transit hub.

Campbell Wilson, CEO and MD of Air India, highlighted that Mumbai will soon join the select list of global cities with two international airports. He emphasized the group’s ambition to connect India with both East and West while supporting the country’s rise as a major aviation hub.

Adani Airport Holdings CEO Arun Bansal echoed this vision, underlining that Air India’s expansion complements NMI’s aim of becoming a benchmark in global aviation. Together, the two partners expect to redefine Mumbai’s connectivity and enhance India’s twin-airport strategy.

Navi Mumbai Airport: Capacity and Development

Navi Mumbai International Airport is being developed in five phases. In its launch phase, the airport will be capable of handling 20 million passengers annually and managing 0.5 million metric tons of cargo.

Once fully operational, the airport will have the capacity to serve 90 million passengers per annum (MPPA) and process 3.2 million metric tons (MMT) of cargo.

Spread over more than 1,160 hectares, NMI will feature two parallel runways, modern terminal infrastructure, and advanced cargo facilities.

The airport’s design draws inspiration from the lotus, India’s national flower, and emphasizes sustainable practices such as renewable energy use and eco-friendly construction.

Air India Group: A Renewed Growth Path

The Air India group, comprising Air India (AI) and Air India Express (IX), is in the midst of a large-scale transformation program, Vihaan.AI.

Following its return to Tata Sons in 2022, the group has launched initiatives that include a massive fleet renewal with 570 new aircraft on order, mergers of Vistara and AirAsia India, and the creation of new aviation training and maintenance infrastructure.

Today, the group operates more than 300 aircraft across 55 domestic and 45 international destinations. With over 30,000 employees, Air India is positioning itself to become a world-class airline while maintaining its Indian identity.

NMI: Strengthening India’s Global Connectivity

Navi Mumbai International Airport is designed not just to relieve congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) but also to serve as a hub for international transit.

The airport’s integration of technology and passenger-focused design aims to deliver smooth journeys while supporting India’s ambition of becoming the world’s third-largest aviation market by 2030.

With Air India Group as an anchor airline, NMI is set to transform the aviation landscape of Western India, expanding opportunities for both passengers and cargo operators.
