MONTREAL— An Air Canada (AC) flight from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) was diverted to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) after a passenger disturbance on August 23, 2025.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Air Canada Flight 1705 landed safely in Chicago late Friday evening after the crew reported the onboard disruption. The flight later resumed and reached Las Vegas about three hours behind schedule.

Air Canada Flight Diverted to Chicago
The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. local time, when the pilots of Flight 1705 requested an unscheduled landing at Chicago O’Hare (ORD).
Air Canada confirmed the diversion but did not share details about the passenger’s behavior or the nature of the disturbance. The airline emphasized that the safety of passengers and crew remained the priority throughout the event.
Authorities in Chicago handled the matter once the aircraft was on the ground. The FAA stated that no arrests were made, and the situation was resolved without escalation.
After a delay, the aircraft departed Chicago and continued its journey to Las Vegas (LAS), arriving approximately three hours later than planned.

FAA Records Show Rising Trend
Unruly passenger behavior has been a growing challenge for airlines worldwide. The FAA reports that more than 1,000 incidents involving disruptive passengers have been recorded so far this year.
While many are resolved without arrests, offenders can still face steep financial consequences. Civil penalties may reach up to $37,000 for each violation, depending on the severity of the incident.
This latest diversion highlights the ongoing pressures airlines and regulators face in maintaining order at 30,000 feet. Cabin crew members are trained to de-escalate tense situations, but diversions remain a necessary measure when passenger actions compromise flight safety.
Air Canada’s Response
Air Canada has not released additional details about the passenger or the specific cause of the disruption.
The airline noted that its crews are trained to respond quickly and decisively to in-flight disturbances, ensuring the safety and security of everyone onboard.
While diversions are rare, they carry significant operational and financial impacts, including delays, added costs, and inconvenience for passengers. For airlines, safety decisions take precedence, even when it means a late arrival.

Similar Incident
A Delta Air Lines (DL) flight from Atlanta (ATL) to San Diego (SAN) diverted to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) after a passenger created a mid-air disturbance on July 5, 2025.
The incident necessitated police intervention and resulted in a temporary delay before the aircraft continued to its destination.
Delta Flight 731, operated with an Airbus A321, was two hours into its journey when the passenger, identified as Corbin Sanders, became disruptive. Authorities at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) confirmed that he was removed from the aircraft and taken into custody after being restrained onboard.
Witnesses reported that Sanders began yelling incoherently and removed his clothing during the flight. Passengers seated nearby said he repeatedly shouted, “I wanna go home, I wanna see my family,” while displaying erratic behavior. San Diego (SAN) resident Rodelyn Kupfersmid, who was seated close to him, believed he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
As the disturbance escalated, fellow passengers and flight attendants attempted to calm him. When those efforts failed, several passengers assisted in restraining Sanders, while the crew decided to divert the flight for safety reasons.
The Airbus A321 landed at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), where officers from the airport’s police department boarded the aircraft. They found Sanders slumped in his seat with slurred speech and bloodshot eyes. He was restrained with plastic zip ties and escorted off without resistance.
Authorities later confirmed Sanders, a resident of North Carolina, was charged with public intoxication. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew during the incident.
