NAVI MUMBAI- The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI) is entering its next major development stage, with Adani Group planning a $3.4 billion investment for its third phase expansion.

The airport, located in Navi Mumbai (BOM), is expected to significantly boost air travel capacity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The first and second phases covering Terminal 1, the initial runway, and a cargo terminal have already seen a $2.2 billion (₹20,000 crore) investment and will be inaugurated in September this year.

Airlines such as IndiGo (6E) and Akasa Air (QP) have confirmed operations from the new facility once it opens.

Navi Mumbai Airport Phase 3 Expansion

Phase 3 of Navi Mumbai International Airport will focus on building Terminal 2, a second runway, automated people movers (APMs), and metro connectivity.

They will begin construction within the next six to nine months and will complete it in approximately three and a half years. The project aims for completion by mid-2029, aligning with the opening of Terminal 2.

Once operational, Terminal 2 will help expand the airport’s passenger handling capacity from 20 million passengers per annum (MPPA) in the initial phase to 50 MPPA.

The design phase is already underway, with Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL) confirming a budget of $3.4 billion (₹30,000 crore) for this expansion.

The first phase will feature a state-of-the-art cargo terminal, scheduled for operations in 2026.

When they complete all 5 phases of the airport, the facility will have two runways, four terminals, and the ability to handle 90 million passengers per annum, making it one of India’s largest aviation hubs.

Airline Partnerships

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has already conducted initial inspections for the aerodrome licence, with final approval expected by the end of this month.

Alongside IndiGo and Akasa Air, discussions with other domestic and international carriers are in advanced stages, ensuring strong connectivity once operations commence.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport will act as a secondary hub to decongest Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM).

Currently, Mumbai’s main airport operates with a single crossing runway and two terminals, limiting expansion potential. The new facility will balance passenger loads and support future traffic growth.

Future Vision

Upon completion, Navi Mumbai (NMI) will transform into a mega aviation hub, supporting 90 million passengers annually and integrating city-side infrastructure like hotels, offices, and retail, with AAHL targeting 70% non-aeronautical revenue by 2030.

The airport’s strategic location and phased expansion align with India’s goal to become the world’s third-largest aviation market by 2030, fostering economic growth and job creation in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
